  • Space–Time Analysis

Li An, An Li et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2015•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 130

Throughout most of human history, events and phenomena of interest have been characterized using space and time as their major characteristic dimensions, in either absolute or relative conceptualizations. Space–time analysis seeks to understand when and where (and sometimes why) things occur. In the context of several of the most recent and substantial advances in individual movement data analysis (time geography in particular) and spatial panel …

  • Understanding Terrorism and Political Violence

    Dipak Kumar Gupta•BOOK•Understanding Terrorism and…•2008

This book explains the lifecycle of terrorist organizations from an innovative theoretical perspective, combining economics with social psychology. It provides a new approach to understanding human behaviour in organized society, and then uses this to analyze the forces shaping the lifecycle of violent political movements. Economic and rational-choice theorists assume that human beings are motivated only by self-utility, yet terrorism is ultimate…

  • Creating a Composite Index for Assessing Country Performance in the Field of Human Rights

  • Government Coercion of Dissidents

Open Access•Dipak Kumar Gupta, Harinder Singh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1993•Citada por: 95•Referencias: 34

The dynamic effect of government coercion on dissident activities has been a controversial issue. It is contended that this relationship is significantly altered when different control variables such as regime type, ideological orientation, and economic performance are employed. Time series data based on 24 countries is used to estimate the net effect of government coercion on two types of dissident activities: protest demonstrations and deaths f…

  • Collective Rebellious Behavior

    Dipak Kumar Gupta, Harinder Singh•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•1992•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 13

The structural theories of collective rebellious behavior can explain only why people rebel in the face of structural imbalance, whereas the rational choice theories are able to explain only why they may choose not to. In order to explain both these motivations, an expected utility model is developed. In contrast with the previous work, the notions of competing uses of time and group utility are introduced to explain some of the existing anomalie…

  • Political Psychology and Neoclassical Theory of Economic Growth

    Dipak Kumar Gupta•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•1987•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 29

Contrary to reality, the traditional neoclassical/Keynesian economics assumes the actor's faith in the political system and thereby excludes antisystemic behavior from consideration. Exploring the historical reasons for the exclusion, this article brings together two important recent theoretical developments: (a) the sociopsychological inquiries into the systemic causes of sociopolitical instability and (b) the impact of sociopolitical instabilit…

  • Income Distribution and Sociopolitical Instability as Determinants of Savings

    Yiannis P Venieris, Dipak Kumar Gupta•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1986•Citada por: 33•Referencias: 2

The purpose of this cross-national study is twofold. First, it introduces income distribution and sociopolitical instability as arguments in the savings function. Second, it presents some empirical evidence in relation to their quantitative effects on savings. It is shown that sociopolitical instability has profound effects on the savings ratio. It is also shown that the bulk of savings is produced by the middle income class. As a result a redist…

  • Second-Generation Rent Control Ordinances

Open Access•Dipak Kumar Gupta, Louis Rea et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Quarterly•1984

The existing literature classifies rent control measures into two groups: first generation (restrictive) and second generation (moderate). However, a perusal of the second generation ordinances reveals a tremendous degree of variation in terms of their restrictiveness. In recognition of this variation, this article builds an ordinal scale for evaluating these ordinances. Specifically, by using discriminant analysis, the relative importance of eac…
