Actual Versus Perceived Generational Differences in the Preferred Working Context: An Empirical Study
This study extends generational research by delineating actual versus perceived cohort differences through a theoretically grounded model using the Social Identity Approach (SIA). Subjects rated how much they valued 15 workplace characteristics and then provided value ratings for generational cohorts based on their perceptions of said cohorts. This allowed for the determination of actual and perceived cohort differences by characteristics. Result…

How age similarity preference, uncertainty, and workplace challenges affect conflict
In this article, we propose that age similarity preference (ASP) among employees increases workplace difficulties in an age-diverse environment. Individuals use social categorizations such as age groupings to help minimize uncertainty, cope with change, and deal with complexity. When placed in an age-diverse work environment, intergroup comparisons regarding age become more salient. We suggest that when a preference exists among employees to work…
Actual Versus Perceived Generational Differences at Work: An Empirical Examination
As the amount of generational diversity increases among today’s workforce, a common topic of conversation is how to handle differences between generational cohorts. But to what extent do generations believe they are different and to what extent are generations actually different? This study examines this question. Using generational cohort theory as a theoretical underpinning, this study considers 15 work-related concepts and the degree to which …
Leadership Development in an Electronic Frontier: Connecting Theory to Experiential Software Through Supplemental Materials
Recently, experiential software has emerged as a new pedagogical tool. This technology promotes both an individualized student experience and an opportunity for classwide, instructor-based learning. However, it is often difficult for students to make connections between their technological experiences and concepts taught in class. In this article, the author discuss one response to this issue—development of supplemental materials to accompany a s…
Alliance management teams and entrainment: Sharing temporal mental models
Creating and administrating successful strategic alliances poses a significant challenge to interorganizational managerial teams. Using shared mental model theory as a framework, we propose that the effectiveness of these managerial teams can be increased if the team shares a common temporal mental model with regard to the alliance. Specifically, a shared mental model in terms of the elements of entrainment (e.g. cycle, pace, time orientation) wi…
Mediation: A Current Review and Theory Development
The mediation literature of the past decade is organized into six topical areas: the determinants of mediation, mediation per se, approaches employed by mediators, determinants of the mediation approaches, outcomes of mediation, and determinants of the mediation outcomes. The literature that describes mediation per se, mediation approaches, and outcomes is very descriptive rather than theoretical. The literature that deals with the determinants o…
