Visual Framing and Politicization of Climate Change: The Case of Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion in Hungary
This paper addresses how the visual framing practices of the youth climate movement in Hungary challenge or reinforce post-political environmental discourse. Our analysis focuses on two social movement organizations that emerged in Hungary during the 2018–2019 global wave of climate activism: Fridays For Future Hungary (FFFH) and Extinction Rebellion Hungary (XRH), with particular attention to the forms, issue frames, and emotional frames they em…
Free Spaces of the Radical Right: The Case of Hungarian National Rock Music Festivals
This article examines how free spaces within a Hungarian radical right-wing movement foster cultural mobilization through a content analysis of 1,614 activities at radical right-wing music festivals from the 2000s and early 2010s. The study identifies three key functions: enhancing political consciousness, which includes prefiguring ideal social and private settings, stigma management, and asserting scientific legitimacy. Beyond reinforcing colle…

Ideology, Policy or Party Affiliation? Voter Behavior in the 2021 Hungarian Primary Elections
This study examines electoral behavior during Hungary’s 2021 opposition primaries. Using a unique election day poll and supplementary survey data, we analyze the socio-demographic and attitudinal profiles of primary voters and compare them to the broader opposition electorate. Findings suggest that in a de-democratizing regime with a dominant party, voter behavior is shaped less by policy preferences and more by sociological attributes such as ag…
Differences within global movements: Insights from FFF climate protests in Western and Eastern Europe
Research on the global climate movement underlines the importance of learning and diffusion processes for adopting similar master frames and movement tactics. At the same time, participation research suggests regionally different patterns of mobilisation and protest behaviour. Due to different historical socialisation processes, Western and Eastern European citizens show differences in political activity despite some signs of convergence. This ar…
From civil society to populism. Mapping a typology of political activism in Europe
The paper presents a typology of activism in Europe. The classification is based on the observation that social and political mobilizations often overlap, blurring the lines between social movements, non-governmental organizations, advocacy groups, and institutionalized political entities such as political parties. The typology’s dimensions are the scope of beneficiaries, the nature of the activism’s goals, the organizational background, and the …

Civil Movements in an Illiberal Regime: Political Activism in Hungary

Civil society as a counterbalance to democratic backlash? The civil society master frame and discursive opportunities of politically active civil organizations in Hungary
Since the mid-2010s a political discourse began on the role of civil organizations as a counterbalance to the democratic backlash in Hungary. The idea that civil society can be an agent of democratic transition and have control over politics can be dated back in East Central Europe to the end of the 1970s. The paper aims to reveal how the political control function, i.e. the civil society master frame resonates in Hungarian society with the help …
