What risk assessment tools can be used with men convicted of child sexual exploitation material offenses? Recommendations from a review of current research
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to review research on recidivism risk assessment tools with individuals convicted of child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) offenses and make recommendations for use in forensic, correctional, and legal settings. HYPOTHESES: Multiple tools would be defensible to use with individuals convicted of CSEM offenses. METHOD: We discuss a minimum threshold of predictive accuracy to justify using a risk tool as an improvement on the…
Measuring coercive control from police reports of intimate partner violence
Is the Static-99R valid for all men with ‘identifiable’ victims? Examining cases of online sexual solicitation of children
The CPORT and Risk Matrix 2000 for Men Convicted of Child Sexual Exploitation Material (CSEM) Offenses
There is demand for valid risk assessment of individuals with child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) offenses. We compared the predictive performance of the Risk Matrix 2000/Sex (RM2000/S) and the Child Pornography Offender Risk Tool (CPORT) among 365 men convicted of CSEM offenses. In fixed 5-year follow-up analyses, the CPORT (area under the curve [AUC] = .73) had significantly higher predictive accuracy than the RM2000/S (AUC = .66) for any…
Child sexual exploitation material offenses
There is global demand for methods to prioritize child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) investigations. Previous research comparing online CSEM offenders based on how they were detected found potentially meaningful differences in offense and individual characteristics, including factors relating to targets for prioritization, such as risk of other offending. The present study builds on this work by providing an in-depth comparison of the indiv…
Comparing the Static-99R and the Child Pornography Offender Risk Tool (CPORT) in two Canadian samples adjudicated of child sexual exploitation material offenses
Applying Offending Trajectory Analyses to Men Adjudicated for Child Sexual Exploitation Material Offenses
We applied offending trajectory analyses to 387 men adjudicated for child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) offenses. After an average of 20 years, we found two trajectories of sexual offending and violent offending: one that peaked in late adolescence and was associated with higher rates of crimes, and one that peaked in the 30s and was associated with a lower rate of crime. We found four trajectories when modeling any crime. The findings high…
Professionals’ Perspectives on Viewing Child Sexual Abuse Images to Improve Response to Victims
The complexity of the phenomenon of child sexual abuse images online (CSAIO) benefits from cross-disciplinary collaboration across law enforcement, child protection, and children's mental health. Through focus groups with professionals working in these fields, this article focuses on when and whether professionals who work with child sexual abuse cases should be exposed to viewing CSAIO and if so under what circumstances doing so would benefit in…
