  • Jailization: Entering the lobby to the US criminal legal system

    Open Access•Gabreélla Friday, Kaitlyn M Sims et al.•ARTICLE•Punishment & Society•2026•References: 6

Despite the substantial interest in mass imprisonment, limited research has studied how mass incarceration has occurred across the 3000 city and county jails in the United States. Using Bureau of Justice Statistics surveys and censuses of US jails, we investigate patterns of jail construction over the last 50 years and ask whether these infrastructural changes represent expanding carceral capacity or simply capacity restructuring , whereby jails …

  • Covid-19 Structural Transformation and Program Adaptation in Emergency Domestic Violence Shelters

    Open Access•Kaitlyn M Sims, Nicole Meyer et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2025•References: 6

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically increased domestic violence (DV) rates and structurally changed how social services like emergency DV shelters could be provided. We surveyed employees at 103 U.S. DV shelter providers about how their organization experienced the COVID-19 pandemic, service provision impacts, and programmatic changes and adaptations. Six main categories emerged from the inductive content analysis: (1) increased need for services,…

  • Barriers to safe and secure housing in the US section 8 voucher programme post- Dobbs

    Open Access•Kaitlyn M Sims, Nicole Meyer et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Social Policy•2024•References: 15

The US affordable housing crisis has exploded since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, spurring increased interest in low-income housing subsidies (Section 8). However, potential Section 8 beneficiaries can lose eligibility, or their spot in line, when family size changes, especially if they do not provide the appropriate paperwork to the public housing authority. We identify two external concerns for Section 8: the disparity between programme d…

  • From Philosophy to Practice: Designing a Multi-Method, Multi-Stage Program Evaluation of the Wisconsin Domestic Violence Housing First Pilot Program

Open Access•Kaitlyn M Sims, Mariel Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2023

Safe and secure housing is a pressing concern for survivors of domestic violence (DV). Domestic Violence Housing First (DVHF) is a policy that serves DV survivors' needs by removing barriers to housing stability via flexible financial assistance, mobile advocacy, trauma-informed practice, and partnerships with community housing providers. In this paper, we outline a study protocol developed to evaluate the efficacy of the Wisconsin Domestic Viole…

  • The Prison Bust: Declining carceral capacity in an era of mass incarceration

    Open Access•Jacob Harris, Kaitlyn M Sims et al.•ARTICLE•Punishment & Society•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 6

While there is a growing literature investigating the causes and consequences of the US prison boom—the tripling of prison facilities between 1970 and 2000—much less is known about current patterns of prison closures. We use novel data capturing the universe of prison closures (N = 188) from 2000 to 2022 to identify and characterize what we term “the prison bust”—the period since 2000 when prison closures began to climb and eventually eclipse new…

  • Sustainable intensification in the Brazilian cattle industry: The role for reduced slaughter age

Open Access•Marin Skidmore, Marin Elisabeth Skidmore et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

The cattle industry in the Brazilian Amazon causes vast deforestation while producing at only one-third of the sustainable capacity. Slaughtering cattle at a younger age directly increases production per hectare per year, all else equal, and provides a potential path for sustainable intensification. Here we show that slaughter age is decreasing in the Amazon biome, but this increase in productivity varies across space and throughout the cattle su…

  • Prisons and Covid-19 Spread in the United States

Kaitlyn M Sims, Jeremy D Foltz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Objectives. To empirically evaluate the relationship between presence of a state or federal prison and COVID-19 case and death counts. Methods. We merged data on locations of federal and state prisons and of local and county jails with daily case and death counts in the United States. We used a selection-on-observables design to estimate the correlation between prisons and COVID-19 spread, controlling for known correlates of COVID-19. Results. We…
