  • The land question, land grabbing and agriculture in Africa

    P Anyang’ Nyong’o, Peter Anyang’ Nyong'o•ARTICLE•International Journal of African…•2013

Land grabbing has emerged as a form of production and export of food and biofuels in the Third World by enterprises owned by foreign governments and business entities. Large tracts of land are either leased or sold to these enterprises cheaply by the state, usually with the argument that such land is empty and needs to be put to good use. But land grabbing dates back to colonial times, thus substantially shaping the political economy of such coun…

    P Anyang''Nyong''O, P Anyang’ Nyong’o et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of African…•1994

In an insightful new study, Donald Freeman examines the development and significance of urban agriculture in Nairobi, Kenya, overturning a number of common assumptions about the inhabitants and economy of African cities. He addresses the ways in which urban agriculture fits into a broader picture of Kenyan social and economic development and discusses the implications of his findings for development theory in general. Freeman begins by exploring …

The two contributions featured here appeared in the ‘CODESRIA Bulletin’ (No. 2, 1991). They were written as a contribution to the agenda of CODESRIA's December 1991 General Assembly, organised around the theme of ‘Democratization Processes in Africa’. Although intervening events may have affected the validity of one or two minor points made, their focus on the twin objectives of individual liberties and social justice provides a valuable insight …

    Open Access•P Anyang’ Nyong’o, P Anyang’ Nyong'o•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•1981•Cited by: 1

In the previous article Mukaru Ng'ang'a sets as his task the investigation into what is happening to the Kenyan peasantry, and what has happened to it in the past. This task, he argues, is necessary in order to understand the social dynamics of rural life. After all, it is only by first understanding the social structure of rural life that we can know what are the possible social dynamics and how they effect, or are affected by, the history of th…

  • The development of a middle peasantry in Nyanza

Although it has been argued that international finance capital has taken a position in support of the ‘middle’ peasantry engaged in household production in Kenya, this support of ‘household producers’ need not necessarily lead to the development or consolidation of a middle peasantry in all areas and with regard to all crops. In the case of Nyanza, it will be argued that the intrusion of international capital into the Nyanzan social formation has…
