  • Observing reuse of 3D data in archaeological excavations

    Open Access•Paola Derudas, Nicolò Dell’unto et al.•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2026•Referências: 5

This study focuses on understanding how archaeologists interact with and reuse 3D data during excavation, drawing on an ad-hoc experiment and a discourse analysis approach taken from socio-linguistic disciplines. The experiment, conducted during the excavation of an Iron Age ‘central place’ in Sweden, reveals the multifaceted utility of 3D models in archaeological discussions. Our analysis shows that these models function as effective tools for v…

  • Disability and Care in Late Medieval Lund, Sweden

    Open Access•Bernard T Nolan, Sébastien Fritz et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2025•Referências: 3

This article is a Bioarchaeology of Care and Disability focused analysis of an individual who suffered a severe fracture of the left knee in Late Medieval Lund, Scania (1300–1536 CE). We question the degree to which written sources from the period represent the reality of the disability experience, and to that end how identities intersect in the Medieval urban landscape. Following an index of care model methodology, we provide an interpretation o…

  • Towards New Futures for Archaeological Data Production

    Open Access•Sara Perry, Anna Simandiraki‐grimshaw et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2025•Citada por: 6•Referências: 12

Archaeologists create vast amounts of specialized data, which are often difficult to access, maintain, and reuse, even for practitioners themselves. In this article, we explore the implication of professional practices of data production in fueling archaeonormativity—i.e., the naturalization of behaviors and structures in archaeology that strip it of affect and meaning and that deny human (and non-human) agency and equity. We contend that storyte…

  • Managing Data from Maritime Archaeology Investigations

    Open Access•Paola Derudas, Brendan Foley•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica•2024

Maritime archaeology excavations, even in a more complex environment, have the same objectives and requirements as terrestrial ones: documenting digging operations to analyze data in the best way, interpreting it, and producing new knowledge for the benefit of multiple communities. 3D documentation and management methodologies have spread widely among practitioners; however, 3D comprehensive tools for scholarly publications still require developm…

  • Semantic Modelling of Archaeological Excavation Data. A review of the current state of the art and a roadmap of activities

Open Access•Markos Katsianis, George Bruseker et al.•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2023

Archaeological data repositories usually manage excavation data collections as project-level entities with restricted capacities to facilitate search or aggregation of excavation data at the sub-collection level (trenches, finds, season reports or excavation diaries etc.). More granular access to excavation data collections would enable layered querying across their informational content. In the past decade, several attempts to adapt CIDOC CRM in…

  • Expanding Field-Archaeology Education

    Open Access•Paola Derudas, Åsa Berggren•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2021•Citada por: 4•Referências: 3

This contribution analyses and discusses the use of 3D technology in education and learning. Basing the discussion on a case study performed during two seasons of a field school for 1st-year archaeology students, we explore how to expand traditional didactic programs by developing and testing a web-based system for educational purposes. We examine how these technologies can be used as educational means and supporting tools during an excavation; h…

  • Sharing Archaeological Knowledge

    Open Access•Paola Derudas, Nicolò Dell’unto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 29

This study describes the development of a digital reporting system designed to provide archaeologists with a dynamic and interactive 3D web platform that can be used for describing in great detail records and activities undertaken across a multi-year field investigation campaign. The system was used to compose the archaeological report of a multi-year investigation and employed during the pandemic crisis for supporting digital courses in archaeol…
