  • Effects of Climate-Related Adaptation and Mitigation Measures on Nordic Cultural Heritage

Open Access•Maja Granberg, Nina Kjølsen Jernæs et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This article is based on the project undertaken by NIKU for, and financed by, the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2021, with supplementary literature and the expertise of the authors added to the report findings. The main aim of the project was to find out how climate-related adaptation and mitigation measures impact the Nordic cultural heritage. In this article we present examples of the different adaptation and mitigation measures that impact th…

  • Climate change and the deteriorating archaeological and environmental archives of the Arctic

Open Access•Jørgen Hollesen, Martin Callanan et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2018•Cited by: 22•References: 28

  • Making Better Use of Monitoring Data

Jørgen Hollesen, Henning Matthiesen et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2016

This paper addresses the knowledge gap that exists in relation to understanding and quantifying the sensitivity of organic-rich archaeological deposits with respect to changes in the soil environment. Based on two case studies we demonstrate that it is possible to quantify the current decay rate in unsaturated archaeological deposits by combining decay rates measured in the laboratory with on-site monitoring data in a simple decay model. The deca…

Vibeke Vandrup Martens, Ove Bergersen et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2016

This paper presents archaeological observations and results of palaeoecological and geo-chemical analyses of archaeological deposits from two rural sites in northernmost Norway. These are combined with climate data and the first period of continuous monitoring of soil temperature, moisture, and redox potential in sections. This data constitutes the basic research material for evaluations of conservation state and preservation conditions. The data…

  • Research on Conservation State and Preservation Conditions in Unsaturated Archaeological Deposits in Oslo

Vibeke Vandrup Martens, Carl-Einar Amundsen et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2012

Archaeological, biological, and geochemical investigations of soil sample series from a section and five boreholes have been studied to evaluate the state of preservation at the time of investigation and the preservation conditions of urban archaeological deposits from medieval Oslo, Norway. Focus has been put on the most fragile deposits in the unsaturated and fluctuation zones. Even with limited investigations, it is possible to assess the arch…

  • Organic Loss in Drained Wetland Monuments

Brian Durham, Robert Van De Noort et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2012

The recent installation of land drains at Star Carr, Yorkshire, UK, has been linked with loss of preservation quality in this important Mesolithic buried landscape, challenging the PARIS principle. Historically captured organic carbon, including organic artefacts, is being converted to soluble organic compounds and less soluble carbon gases. At the same time sulphur and nitrogen compounds are oxidized to species that are chemically destructive of…
