  • An Application of the Three-Step Test-Interview (TSTI) in the Validation of the Relational Depth Frequency Scale

Open Access•Gina Di Malta, Mick Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of a new qualitative scale development methodology—Three-Step Test-Interview (TSTI)—in its first application in the validation of a psychotherapy scale: The Relational Depth Frequency Scale (RDFS). The TSTI is a cognitive pretesting method designed to uncover potential problems in scale construction. The RDFS is a six-item unidimensional scale of in-depth therapeutic relating, designed …

  • Framing Unauthorized Immigrants: The Effects of Labels on Evaluations

    Open Access•Reidar Ommundsen, Knud S Larsen et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2014

In the U.S. media, unauthorized immigrants are often interchangeably referred to as "illegal aliens," "illegal immigrants," and undocumented immigrants." In spite of formal equivalence, these terms carry different connotations, but the effects of these labels on people's attitudes toward immigrants are not well documented. In this replication study, 274 undergraduate students in psychology responded to one of three randomly distributed versions o…

  • Exploring the Relationships between Fear-Related Xenophobia, Perceptions of Out-Group Entitativity, and Social Contact in Norway

Open Access•Reidar Ommundsen, Oksana Yakushko et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2013

An internet-related survey distributed to Norwegian students explored predictors of fear-related xenophobia toward immigrants. Specifically, this study examined a new social construct called "entitativity" (i.e., the extent to which out-group members are perceived as bonded together in a cohesive or organized unit), as well as frequency of informal social contact and valence of a recent encounter in relation to certain xenophobic attitudes. Corre…

  • Developing and validating a cross-national cumulative scale measuring attitudes toward illegal immigrants

Kees Van Der Veer, Laurens Higler et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The article reports the results of a Mokken Scale Procedure (MSP) developing a hierarchical cross-national scale gauging attitudes toward illegal immigration, and a subsequent qualitative cross-national assessment of this scale. Responses to a 20-item Likert-type-scale were collected in two national representative surveys in the Netherlands and New Zealand. The MSP analysis yielded a cumulative scale with the same four items for each with an acce…

  • Cross-National Measure of Fear-Based Xenophobia: Development of a Cumulative Scale

Open Access•Kees Van Der Veer, Oksana Yakushko et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2011

To apply a Mokken Scale Procedure in developing a hierarchical cross-national scale to measure xenophobia, a pool of 30 xenophobia-related items was collected from several sources and modified using established unidimensional criteria. The survey was administered to 608 undergraduate students in the USA, 193 undergraduate students in The Netherlands, and 303 undergraduate students in Norway. 14 items measuring perceived threat or fear and meeting…

  • On use of Student Samples for Scale Construction

    Open Access•Regina Pernice, Regina E Pernice et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2008

This research note responds to the question of whether a convenience sample of undergraduate students may be successfully utilized in concept development and in scale construction, and in what way the results are comparable to the findings of a representative national sample. The results of a Mokken analysis in both samples support the hypothesis that convenience samples have utility in concept development and in developing measures that can also…

  • Developing Attitude Statements toward Illegal Immigration: Transcultural Reliability and Utility

Open Access•Reidar Ommundsen, Kees Van Der Veer et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2007

This is a report on the utility of a scale measuring attitudes toward illegal immigrants in two samples from nations that have more people moving out of the country than moving into the country. The Attitude toward Illegal Immigrants Scale was administered to 219 undergraduates from Sofia University in Bulgaria, and 179 undergraduates from Hanoi State University in Vietnam. Results yielded a scale with no sex differences, and acceptable alpha coe…

  • An Application of the Three‐Step Test‐Interview (TSTI): A Validation Study of the Dutch and Norwegian Versions of the ‘Illegal Aliens Scale’

Tony Hak, Kees Van Der Veer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 1

In this paper the results of a validation study of the Dutch and Norwegian versions of the Illegal Aliens (IA) Scale are discussed. The main objective is to evaluate the usefulness of the ThreeStep TestInterview (TSTI) as a pretesting method in a validation study. The TSTI is a new technique specifically developed to detect problems with selfcompletion questionnaires. The studys aims were twofold: (1) to evaluate the usefulness of the TSTI for de…

  • Structure of Attitudes toward Illegal Immigration: Development of Cross-National Cumulative Scales

Open Access•Kees Van Der Veer, Reidar Ommundsen et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2004

This research examined the possibility of developing Mokken cumulative scales measuring attitudes toward illegal immigrants in a 9-nation sample. A total of 1,407 respondents primarily from national and regional universities participated in the surveys including the 20-item Illegal Immigration Scale. The scales displayed acceptable reliability with coefficients alpha ranging from .79 to .93. A Procrustes analysis yielded coefficients of congruenc…

  • Contextualization in Newspaper Articles: A Sequential Analysis of Actors' Quotes on the Patco Affair

Open Access•Harry Van den Berg, Johannes H Smit et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•1992•References: 3

Newspaper articles on social conflict are mainly constructed from direct and indirect quotes from actors involved in the conflict, combined with statements made by the editor. The selection of these statements represents a specific range of different viewpoints concerning some `newsworthy' event. But the preferred meaning of a news article as a whole depends not only on the selection but also on the presentation of these selected statements in th…

  • Musical Discourse in Television Documentaries: Structure and Functions

Open Access•Harry Van den Berg, Kees Van Der Veer•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•1990•References: 1

This article deals with the possibilities of analysing the extra-musical meaning of popular music in television documentaries. After considering the structure of documentaries and the problems involved in analysing them, attention is paid to analyses of film music by musicologists. In particular, the authors focus on a recently developed approach for the analysis of musical discourse in television films. Then, a method is presented to analyse the…
