The wisdom of Narcissus
This paper examines the educational thought of Martianus Capella, a fifth-century Carthaginian writer, through his only surviving work The Marriage of Mercury and Philology. The didactic handbook is an ode to learning, adorning a faltering introduction to the liberal arts with baroque mythological ornamentation. The paper highlights Capella’s unique approach to the liberal arts, framed within a Neo-Platonic context, that views learning as a means…
Complicated shadows
This paper comprises a Socratic dialogue that explores the mix of advocacy, acceptance, apathy, confusion, and criticality often presented by new educational researchers as they encounter and navigate positionality in the first stages of their research projects. The fictionalised ancient form allows a vehicle to explore common debates and discussions with new researchers as they seek to accommodate to the demands of reflexivity.Concluding with an …
A Vision for Black Lives
In 2012, Trayvon Martin, a Black teenager armed with nothing more than a bag of candy, was killed by a “neighborhood watch coordinator” while returning to the home where he was staying in a gated Florida community. In the wake of the killer's acquittal and the deaths of numerous African Americans while in police custody, Black Lives Matter was born. It has since grown into a powerful international movement focused on issues of racism and social j…
Hope and contradiction
This paper looks at tensions arising in the educational thought of late antiquity from the conflict between assumptions regarding the low worth of practical knowledge and the contribution practical education can make to the wider purposes educational thinkers assigned to learning. Drawing on the educational writings of Augustine, Martianus Cappella and Boethius, I argue that there are vagaries and contradictions in their depreciation of the pract…

Green Political Science
Each year we have the honor to publish an article version of the APSA Presidential Address. In the six years we have done this John Ishiyama is the first comparativist whose work we have featured in this capacity. He presently holds an appointment as University Distinguished Research Professor of Political Science at the University of North Texas. John has long been a fixture in the subfield of comparative politics for his contributions on democr…
Looking Backward, Looking Forward
This issue marks the last of our six years as the editorial team of Perspectives on Politics. It has been both a richly rewarding and exhausting journey, as well as a labor of love. As with all journeys, some of what we encountered along the way was foreseeable, but much of it was not. For example, we knew that Donald Trump’s presidency would be consequential and in many ways unprecedented when we assumed the helm in June 2017, but not that he wo…

Rewilding futures
The exclusion zone in Fukushima has become an object of intense interest for scientists and politicians where the rebound of wildlife is taken to be compelling evidence of nature’s resilience in the face of nuclear disasters. By taking up a range of cinematic works on re-wilding, this paper explores how ecological futures are reimagined through human and non-human interactions. It seeks to understand re-wilding as attempts to remake “life” by sec…

A Tale of Two Indias
The subject of empire has emerged as a central concern in political theory. Edmund Burke and John Stuart Mill have been at the center of much recent scholarship on this topic. A number of depictions of Burke as a critic and Mill as a defender of empire rely largely on their writings about India. This article focuses instead on Burke and Mill’s writings on the West Indies and America from the standpoint of both thinkers’ connection to Scottish Enl…

Multicultural Liberals and the Rushdie Affair
This article critically analyzes the work of Will Kymlicka, Charles Taylor, and Michael Walzer, three of the most important contemporary political philosophers writing on issues of multiculturalism. It uses the Rushdie affair, and each theorist's interpretation of it, as the basis for an immanent critique of “multicultural liberalism,” a theory defined by the dual commitment to cultural rights for minority groups and certain core liberal principl…

People Love Player’s’
This article explores the background, creation and reception of a prominent cigarette advertising campaign from the early 1960s. The advertisements featured young couples falling in love as they shared Player's Medium cigarettes together. As such, the advertisements reflected the central place of the teenager within post-war British consumer culture. The campaign was built upon the insights of market research, particularly that carried out by Mar…
Burke on Democracy as the Death of Western Civilization
This essay concerns Edmund Burke's view of the civilizing process. It begins by developing Burke's revision of Scottish Enlightenment historiography from the perspective of his own earlier treatise on aesthetics. Here, the argument is that Burke saw Western civilization as guaranteed by two institutions, the "sublime" church and the "beautiful" nobility, that jointly produced the requisite level of "habitual social discipline" in the masses neces…

Revisiting the Middle Way
Mark Bevir's book stands as one of the most influential recent interventions into debates central to the history of political thought, intellectual history, and textual interpretation more broadly. The introductory essay to this symposium situates Bevir's position as not only a "middle way" between Straussian and postmodern deconstructive approaches, but one that distinguishes itself from the leading claimants to that terrain, namely the "Cambrid…
