Effect of eHealth intervention (Adhere) on adherence to partograph and WHO safe childbirth checklist in intrapartum care
The partograph and WHO safe childbirth checklist (SCC), which include on-admission, before-birth, after-birth and discharge components, are quality improvement (QI) tools in intrapartum care that have long been recommended for use. However, poor-quality intrapartum care remains a significant barrier to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in countries like Ethiopia, largely due to total non-use or poor adherence to these QI tools. eHeal…
Health and demographic surveillance sites in Ethiopia
Health and demographic surveillance sites (HDSS) provide sampling frames to conduct longitudinal studies. This review aims to provide a comprehensive characterization of HDSS in Ethiopia and assess its potential as a robust infrastructure for longitudinal studies on aging-related and other health outcomes. We searched databases including PubMed for peer-reviewed articles, HDSS reports, strategic papers, and other pertinent literature, and extract…
Determinants of HIV viral load suppression rates in Amhara region, Ethiopia with a large number of internally displaced people
In a region with large numbers of IDP, virologic failure is more common in older age groups. VL and TAT vary by testing centers which could be reflective of ART default and delay in courier mail driven by internal displacement
Gender-based violence in the context of armed conflict in Northern Ethiopia
GBV survivors were subjected to multiple and compounding types of violence, with a wide range of adverse health consequences for survivors and their families. GBV survivors require multifaceted interventions including psychological, health, and economic support to rehabilitate them to lead a productive life
HIV Stigma in Awi Zone, Northwest Ethiopia, and a Unique Community Association as a Potential Partner
Indigenous institutions play a vital role in fighting HIV stigma by leveraging their cultural knowledge, leadership, and community connections. Understanding HIV/AIDS attitudes, information gaps, and stigma among members of indigenous institutions is critical for devising culturally relevant and successful interventions and preventative strategies. This study was conducted with the objective of assessing the levels of knowledge about HIV/AIDS and…
Epidemiological Characteristics of Cancer Patients Attending at Felege Hiwot Referral Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia
We found that there is a variation in the cancer types with sex. This study provides an insight for further exploration of environmental and occupational exposure related factors for cancer to guide future cancer prevention and control programs. The current study also calls for expansion of cancer registry sites, including in rural areas in the region
Continued adherence to community-based health insurance scheme in two districts of northeast Ethiopia
The fact that larger households and those with chronic illness remained longer in the scheme is suggestive of adverse selection. It is needed to reconsider the premium level in line with household size to attract small size households. Resolving problems related to the quality of health care can be a cross-cutting area of intervention to retain members by building trust in the scheme and enhancing the risk protection ability of the schemes
Economic costs and Predictors of occupation-related Injuries in Ethiopian sugar industries from the Employer’s perspective
Employers' toll of occupation-related injuries has severe economic implications. The influential factors that elevated the total cost variation were: long-term absence from work, unsafe acts of the workers, having a sleeping disorder, co-morbidity, and severity (type) of injury. Therefore, the identified modifiable factors are the areas of intervention to reduce the cost of occupation-related injuries
Hotspots of female genital mutilation/cutting and associated factors among girls in Ethiopia
In this study, spatial clustering of FGM/C among girls was observed in Ethiopia, and FGM/C hotspots were detected in Afar, Amhara, Tigray, Benishangul Gumuz, Oromia, SNNPR and Somali regions including Dire Dawa Town. Both individual and community level factors play a significant role in the practice of FGM/C. Hence, FGM/C hotspots require priority interventions, and it is also better if the targeted interventions consider both individual and comm…
