Compensatory network capital
Critical Health Literacy (CHL) emphasizes that health-related action is shaped by power, inequality and structural conditions, not by individual skills alone. This study examines a more specific and under-theorized link in that process: how negative and ambivalent social ties affect whether health-related competencies are enacted as concrete action in everyday healthcare. Drawing on 12 semi-structured interviews with adults living with multimorbi…
Measuring digital health literacy and its associations with determinants and health outcomes in 13 countries

Consequently, digital health literacy skills are likewise becoming increasingly important. The instrument is a modified and extended ver…
Food outlet availability differs according to area socioeconomic status in Denmark
Area SES influenced the presence of supermarkets, convenience stores, and fast-food outlets, but not the density of these establishments
Association between new-onset atrial fibrillation and adverse clinical outcomes by country of origin
AF was associated with a substantially higher risk of adverse clinical outcomes among Danish-born, and all examined migrant populations. However, the impact of AF appeared to differ according to country of origin, which could indicate potential differences in AF care and compliance
Measuring associations between the food environment and dietary habits
The associations highlight that choosing food outlet density versus proportions to quantify the foodscape impact findings of substantial importance when considering the significance level and direction of association. Findings suggests a threshold effect when using density measures indicating abundance of many food outlets, at which the association with dietary quality alters significantly towards healthier diet quality
Our Healthy Community Conceptual Framework and Intervention Model for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Municipalities
This paper introduces the conceptual framework and intervention model of Our Healthy Community (OHC), a new, coordinated, and integrated approach towards health promotion and disease prevention in municipalities. The model is inspired by systems-based approaches and employs a supersetting approach for engaging stakeholders across sectors in the development and implementation of interventions to increase health and well-being among citizens. The c…
Use of the least intrusive coercion at Danish psychiatric wards
The order of used coercive measures is not consistent with the international ranking of the least intrusive types, especially in men and in younger adults
Measuring Comprehensive, General Health Literacy in the General Adult Population
The HLS 19 -Q12, based on a comprehensive understanding of HL, shows acceptable psychometric and validity characteristics for different languages, country contexts, and methods of data collection, and is suitable for measuring HL in general, national, adult populations. There are also indications for further improvement of the instrument
The HLS19-COM-P, a New Instrument for Measuring Communicative Health Literacy in Interaction with Physicians
The HLS 19 -COM-P instrument was well accepted in nine countries, in different data collection modes, and could be used to measure COM-HL
Association of perceived work pace and physical work demands with occupational accidents
Ageing male construction workers with high physical work demands had statistically significant higher odds of having an occupational accident. By contrast, perceived work pace was not associated with occupational accidents in this large cross-sectional study
Recruiting residents from disadvantaged neighbourhoods for community‐based health promotion and disease prevention services in Denmark—How, why and under what circumstances does an active door‐to‐door…
Residents living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods have higher mortality and morbidity and participate less in health services than people living in more prosperous areas. Studies on how and why different approaches work for recruiting residents from disadvantaged neighbourhoods to health services are needed. Conducting face-to-face meetings with obliging health professionals (HPs) as part of an active recruitment strategy increases interest in ser…
Associations of health literacy with socioeconomic position, health risk behavior, and health status
Despite a relatively highly educated population, the prevalence of inadequate health literacy is high. Inadequate health literacy is strongly associated with a low socioeconomic position, poor health status, inactivity, and overweight, but to a lesser extent with health behavior factors such as smoking and high alcohol consumption
The role of social technologies in community care – A realist evaluation of a Danish web‐based citizen‐to‐citizen platform adopted in community care to promote belonging and mental health
As social technologies increase in popularity, there is a growing interest in incorporating them into mental health interventions. Research shows that the use of social technologies may support belonging and mental health. Findings, however, are contradictory and highlight the need to clarify the processes and mechanisms by which this technology may have positive effects. This study conducted a realist evaluation of a web-based citizen-to-citizen…
Social relationship adversities throughout the lifecourse and risk of loneliness in later life
Understanding how social experiences throughout life shape later loneliness levels may help to identify how to alleviate loneliness at later lifestages. This study investigates the association between social relationship adversities throughout the lifecourse and loneliness in later life. Using prospective data from the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development (N = 2,453), we conducted multivariable analyses to investigat…
Infancy weight gain, parental socioeconomic position, and childhood overweight and obesity
Both rapid and very rapid weight gain were associated with substantially higher risks of COO but these associations were not modified by SEP. This indicates that promotion of healthy weight gain should take place in all population groups irrespective of their SEP
Perceived stress as a risk factor of unemployment
Perceived everyday life stress nearly doubled the risk of subsequent unemployment in a working population. No statistically significant interactions between SES and perceived stress were found. This indicates that stress prevention among the working population should not solely focus on stress in the workplace but also include stress from everyday life
Social capital and frequent attenders in general practice
This study suggests that for women, some aspects of social capital are associated with frequent attendance in general practice, and the statistically significant dimensions belonged to both cognitive and structural aspects of social capital. This association was not seen for men. This indicates a multifaceted and heterogeneous relationship between social capital and frequent attendance among genders
An explorative evaluation study of the mechanisms underlying a community-based fitness centre in Denmark - Why do residents participate and keep up the healthy activities
Health-risk behaviour like physical inactivity is more evident in deprived neighbourhoods than in nondeprived neighbourhoods, and in the former knowledge is lacking as to what causes effects in interventions on physical activity. A possible contribution to physical activity interventions is community engagement, which has been shown to be effective for changing health-risk behaviour, but more knowledge is needed on "the active ingredients" or mec…
The indirect and direct pathways between physical fitness and academic achievement on commencement in post-compulsory education in a historical cohort of Danish school youth
Physical fitness had a positive effect on post-compulsory education commencement. A substantial part of this effect was mediated through academic achievement
The long-term financial consequences of breast cancer
A breast cancer diagnosis led to negative effects on income, which ameliorated over the following seven years. Sociodemographic factors and prior psychiatric medical treatment might influence long-term consequences of breast cancer on income
Mental health and school dropout across educational levels and genders
Poor mental health was significantly associated to dropout among students in vocational and higher education. Males in higher education had five times the risk of dropout when reporting poor mental health, while no such association was found for females
Socioeconomic inequality and mortality - a regional Danish cohort study
Socioeconomic inequality influenced mortality substantially even when adjusted for a range of determinants that might explain the association. Further studies are needed to understand this important relationship
Associations between follow-up screening after gestational diabetes and early detection of diabetes – a register based study
Participation in follow-up screening after gestational diabetes is low in the North Denmark Region. Follow-up screening ensures early detection of diabetes and initiation of treatment. Our results emphasize the importance of development of interventions to improve early detection and prevention of diabetes after gestational diabetes
Mental Health in the Workforce
Background: Prevalence of mental disorders at work is commonly reported on the subclinical level. Data on clinical caseness as to ICD-10 among employees is scarce. Aims: (i) To establish the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in the Danish workforce in large enterprises based on a self-report measure. (ii) To verify the screening results by use of a structured diagnostic interview. (iii) To analyze associations with demographics and work- and he…
Psychopathology, Defence Mechanisms, and the Psychosocial Work Environment

Data on the relationships between employees’ mental health status, their perceptions of work, and their psychological defences are scarce. Aims: To examine the role that personal defences play in the relationship between psychiatric symp…
