Associations Between Violence and Psychological Distress Among Women Experiencing Homelessness: A Cross-Sectional Study
This study examines the association between violence exposure and psychological distress among women experiencing homelessness ( n = 41). Using a cross-sectional survey design, we assessed emotional, physical, and sexual violence perpetrated by both close (e.g., intimate partners, family members) and non-close (e.g., acquaintances, strangers) individuals and their impact on mental well-being. Findings indicate high levels of violence, with greate…
Health literacy and its association with mental and spiritual well-being among women experiencing homelessness
Low health literacy (HL) has been linked to low self-rated health, reduced efficacy of behaviour change, and challenges in preventing, treating, or managing health conditions. People experiencing homelessness are at risk of poor HL; however, few studies have investigated HL in relation to mental and spiritual well-being among people experiencing homelessness in general, or women experiencing homelessness specifically. This cross-sectional study o…
Excess mortality among people in homelessness with substance use disorders: A Swedish cohort study
Homelessness increased mortality, but the risk decreased after adjusting for narcotic use, intravenous drug use and inpatient care for SUDs. Interventions are needed to reduce excess mortality among people in homelessness with SUDs
Defining and refining emplacement by deepening the understanding of embeddedness, situatedness, and enactedness
Using a transactional frame of reference, this paper situates the concept of emplacement within and between the notions of embeddedness, situatedness, and enactedness. Emplacement recognises how the spaces and places in which we engage in occupations both shape and are shaped by engagement. Hence, the meaning and importance attributed to certain occupations can involve a complex, unbounded, uncertain, and often messy process. Further, embeddednes…
Enacting citizenship through participation in a technological society: A longitudinal three-year study among people with dementia in Sweden
The role of Everyday Technology (ET) use is presented as subsidiary or neutral in policy for age- and dementia-friendly communities; and yet, research suggests that older people, especially those with dementia, experience increased challenges using ET in their everyday lives. Through the lens of micro-citizenship, the study aims to deepen the knowledge about how use of ET outside the home, including portable ETs, relates to participation in place…
Social Participation in Relation to Technology Use and Social Deprivation: A Mixed Methods Study Among Older People with and without Dementia
Social participation is a modifiable determinant for health and wellbeing among older people; however, social participation is increasingly dependent on technology use. This study investigated social participation in relation to Everyday Technology use and social deprivation of the living environment, among older people with and without dementia in the United Kingdom. Sixty-four people with dementia and sixty-four people without dementia were int…
Kaleidoscopic associations between life outside home and the technological environment that shape occupational injustice as revealed through cross-sectional statistical modelling
BACKGROUND: Everyday life outside home and accessing a variety of places are central to occupation. Technology is ever more taken for granted, even outside home, and for some may culminate in occupational injustice. This study aims to explore the association between everyday technologies (ET), particularly out of home, and the number of places older adults with and without dementia go to, in rural and urban environments. METHOD: The Everyday Tech…
