‘Working with you all was healing’: Collective reflections on struggle, hope, and relationality through organizing CCLR 2021
Leisure scholars are increasingly resisting pervasive neoliberal pressures throughout the academy. Canadian Congress on Leisure Research (CCLR) 2021 was hosted amid great uncertainty due to the prolonged impacts of the COVID-19 global pandemic and racial reckoning and unrest. In this article, the four CCLR 2021 co-organizers share our reflections on the conference planning process that involved various systemic tensions (e.g. racial unrest within…
Negotiations of responsibility for community and personal care: Emotional coping, leisure, and restoration for public safety personnel
Uniformed public safety personnels (PSPs) are the first line of care on scenes of distress, where they are put into positions to negotiate the responsibilities of community and personal care. This work helps expose the oppressive nature that systems governing community safety have on bodies that are uniformed. Using critical, narrative approaches, 11 public safety personnel participants were recruited to participate in focus groups and interviews…
‘ You’re alive, but are you living? ’ Exploring long Covid (LC)’s impact on social and leisure well-being for individuals and caregivers
Long COVID (LC) affects physical health and cognition, limiting participation in social and leisure activities. As a novel disabling condition following a COVID-19 infection, informal caregivers of those with LC have taken on expanded roles, including educating themselves on this diagnosis. Gathering insights from people living with LC (PWLC) and their caregivers is crucial for understanding its impact on well-being and identifying targeted rehab…
Co-designing a 'Long Covid Education and Awareness Hub: Addressing psychosocial needs across the continuum of care
Background: Up to 35% of people who have contracted the acute COVID-19 virus are experiencing prolonged symptoms, now known as Long COVID (LC)1. Our data supports that living with LC significantly impacts one’s physical health and cognition, thereby affecting one’s psychosocial well-being (social relationships, emotional wellness, and space/time for fun and joy (leisure)). Our research team worked collaboratively with LC stakeholders (e.g., peopl…

(Re)claiming subversive spaces on TikTok: The complexities of body activisms within physical activity cultures
Feminist organising in digital spaces, such as social media, has the potential for activism, resistance, and visibility; yet these spaces continue to be dominated by narrow body representations and shaped by unequal power dynamics. We propose that bodies of difference may find vibrant and difference-affirming homes within their digital communities via innovative algorithm-based social media spheres, such as TikTok. Using a creative methodological…
Mental Illness as a Valued Identity: How a Leisure Initiative Promoting Connection and Understanding Sets the Stage for Inclusion
Living with mental illness often subjects individuals to stigma and exclusion. While leisure plays an important role in supporting inclusion and mental health recovery, we know little about leisure initiatives designed explicitly to promote inclusion by countering stigma and exclusion. This study examined participant experiences in a leisure-based initiative known as a living library. This initiative provides opportunities for individuals living …
Creating Inter-Learning Connections: Opportunities for Peer Collaboration among Leisure Students
This paper explores an inter-learning teaching method designed and utilized by the authors in the Winter 2021 term for first- and upper-year therapeutic recreation (TR) students in an online platform. This collaborative teaching method sought to make intentional space for upper-year students to take the lead on and facilitate seminars for first-year students on topics aligned with their course content and case-study assignment. In this paper we o…
Production Pedagogy: Exploring New Vistas in TR through Videomaking
This paper discusses use of a scaffolded videomaking assignment to encourage students to engage with new literacies – creation of media that blends text, sound, and imagery – to expand the range through which students demonstrate knowledge and application of philosophical concepts in everyday Therapeutic Recreation (TR) practice. Technology is transforming the way we have come to value knowledge leading participants to value different models of t…
Pod-agogies: Story-Sharing Interviews for Leisure Students
This paper explores the use of podcast-style interview pedagogies (pod-agogies) as an innovate teaching method in a capstone therapeutic recreation (TR) seminar course. The purpose of the pod-agogies course component was to create meaningful connections between upper-year TR students and TR practitioners working in the field and on the frontlines of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Students engaged with the audio-recorded story-sharing interviews an…
Relational mentorship for justice-oriented scholarship: Space for care, reckoning, and supported discomfort
We see relational mentorship as a move towards shared vulnerability, but also a relationship that is reciprocal, non-competitive, and non-authoritarian. We reflect on growth-spurring (and often uncomfortable) conversations about privilege, race, inaction, among other topics amidst social unrest and personal tensions with/in the systems in which we continue to be complicit. Through returning to cultural protocols, love, thinkacting, theorypractici…
Practices of Gratitude and Outdoor Leisure
In this article, we approach outdoor leisure as a contingent, transforming cultural phenomenon and advocate for social practices that foster relationality, care, and responsibility across human and more-than-human domains. Our specific purpose is to illuminate how practices of gratitude are shaping and being shaped within the contexts of an adult nature connection apprenticeship program based in Ontario, Canada. Drawing on aspects of Bourdieu’s t…
