Plasters and mortars from the theatre in Nea Paphos (Cyprus): A multidisciplinary study
The study of plasters and mortars constitutes a relevant tool in reconstructing the technological knowledge of the workforces at play. Through a multidisciplinary and multiscale approach, this project characterizes selected samples from the Hellenistic-Roman theatre in Nea Paphos (Cyprus), highlighting the characteristics of the raw materials, the productive processes, and the functional properties. Petrographic analysis combined with x-ray diffr…
A new laboratory‐based method to experimentally induce diagenetic modifications in human bone tissue using archaeological gravesoils
The conditions of the burial environment trigger microstructural modifications and physical‐chemical changes in the bone, such as chemical dissolution, increase of crystallinity, chemical exchanges, collagen degradation and changes in porosity, hence to reproduce these patterns is a challenging task. This work presents a new method to accelerate the diagenetic processes in the laboratory. Artificial aging is obtained by immersion at 80°C in “enri…
Aqueous polyacrylate latex nanodispersions used as consolidation agents to improve mechanical properties of Prague sandstone
Bone diagenesis in the medieval cemetery of Vratislavs' Palace in Prague
Bone diagenesis in the loess deposits of Central Europe: The Celtic site of Radovesice in Bohemia
The Assessment of Bone Deterioration with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in a Multidisciplinary Context: The Case of the Unesco World Heritage Site of Sedlec, Czechia
Human remains from the skeletal collection of the UNESCO world heritage site of Sedlec (Czechia) have been investigated with 1 H, 31 P and 13 C magic‐angle‐spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The quantitative description of the component of the phosphorus signal attributed to the external amorphous hydrated layer of the mineral apatite particles is considered a sensitive index of the bone integrity, in general agreement with indicat…
Consolidation of weak lime mortars by means of saturated solution of calcium hydroxide or barium hydroxide
This paper presents research results on the effects of repeated treatments with saturated solutions of calcium hydroxide (lime water) or barium hydroxide (barium water) on consolidating a friable lime mortar. The influence of lime or barium water treatment on various mainly mechanical characteristics of consolidated lime mortar was studied in detail by means of tests on non-standard specimens fabricated from a poor mortar of 1:9 vol. lime-to-sand…
