Informing Policy-Making at Sub-Local Authority Spatial Levels: Using Small Area Micro-Data from the 2001 Census
This article discusses how the release of small area microdata (SAM) from the 2001 UK Population Census could help provide better information in the policy-making process at sub-local authority spatial levels. An experimental set of SAM from the 1991 Census, provided by National Statistics, was used to develop a methodology which can provide SAM estimates of the effects of area at ward level, and can separate these spatial effects from compositio…
Informing Policy Making: New Approaches to Analysing the 2001 Census
This article demonstrates how the Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs) and Customised Output from the 2001 UK Population Census can be used to supplement existing sets of information and data sources available to central and local government. It argues that these data sources can provide an important asset for policy making and resource allocation in local government. The SARs from the 1991 Census could be used to gain a provisional evaluation an…
Developing Indicators to Assess the Potential for Urban Regeneration: Improvements Using the 1991 Census of Population Samples of Anonymised Records
This paper explores possibilities for improvements in the quality of indicators to assess the potential for urban regeneration. A new source of data—the 1991 Census of Population Samples of Anonymised Records—is investigated. Refinements and improvements in the quality and targeting of indicators for the Single Regeneration Budget and other regeneration initiatives are recom mended. It is concluded that the 2 per cent Sample of Anonymised Records…
Cycling on the Journey to Work: Analysis of Socioeconomic Variables from the UK 1991 Population Census Samples of Anonymised Records

Analysis of Access to Cars from the 1991 UK Census Samples of Anonymised Records: A Case Study of the Elderly Population of Sheffield
This study demonstrates how analysis of new British Census data (the Samples of Anonymised Records) may enhance other data sets for transport and planning purposes. The study uses logistic regression with categorical and dichotomous socio-economic independent variables to investigate access to cars amongst the elderly population in Sheffield. The method can be applied to any UK metropolitan or county area. The conclusions have implications for po…
