Afterword: Texts and narratives
The 'texts' portion of this part of the publication has explored narratives of religious individualisation that have set in motion discourses which, to varying degrees, empower and promote religious individualisation. The authors of these narratives are, in a sense, the founders of discursivity, from whom currents of thought seem to flow which have informed modes of religious individualisation. It is, however, often the 'modes of circulation, val…
The Origins of Nationalism in East and Central Africa: The Zambian Case
The literature on the origins of African nationalism in Zambia is still sparse, despite Robert Rotberg&s;s pioneering work, published in 1966. Although primary resistance is less important in Zambia than in neighbouring territories, the pattern of the subsequent first decades of colonial rule falls into line with the other East and Central African territories. By 1928 the control of copper mining was held by the South Africa-based Rhodesian Anglo…
Planetary Lives: Edward Warrulan, Edward John Eyre, and Queen Victoria
This article explores the relationship between Victorian and Ngaiwong ways of knowing by bringing a planetary framework to bear upon an extraordinary meeting which took place at Buckingham Palace on 26 January 1846. To do so, it invokes the long history of the Antipodes; deploys, modifies and comments upon methodologies for conceiving and analysing world literature by Americanist Wai Chee Dimock; and engages with the role of the imagination in Ga…

Stranger Danger: Approaching Home and Ten Canoes
This essay explores the meaning of home in the 2006 film Ten Canoes. The film resulted from an extraordinary collaboration between the Ramingining Aboriginal community of northeastern Arnhem Land and Australian art-house director Rolf de Heer. It tells of Dayindi (Jamie Dayindi Gulpilil Dalaithngu), a young Yolngu man living one thousand years ago, who is in love with his elder brother's youngest wife. To correct Dayindi's "wrong feelings," his b…
Mid-Victorian Reading and the Antipodes
Focusing on a process of reading â conscriptedâ by Victorian sensation fiction, the article begins â by outlining the European tradition of the Antipodes before discussing the conscription process using [Mary Elizabeth Braddonâ s] Lady Audleyâ s Secret, and then comparing this to the discoveries and development of the early science of readingâ . It concludes â by alluding to the implications of this reading process for the formation of British im…
Arguing With the Bible”: Reporting Biblical Argumentation in Contemporary North American Debates
ne of many pleasures in sixteen years of working beside Fred Wisse V^/has been an increasingly shared interest in the argumentative economy of the New Testament texts, especially at a time in the life of the churches when reference to a few schematized master biblical narratives has all but eclipsed appeal to the Bible's propositional arguments. In Biblical Theology and Christian Ethics today, as well as in the discourse of journalism, "the story"…
Treating Dora in *His Natural Life
This article concentrates on the characterisation of Dora, the heroine in the serialised version of His Natural Life. The author wants â to cast new light on Clarkeâ s literary aesthetic, on his philosophy, by examining the treatment of his heroine in the context of the middle-class Victorian market for popular booksâ (67). By treatment he means not so much the changes from the serialised version (Dora) to the book version (Sylvia), but rather â …

White Populism in Southern Rhodesia
The question of populism in Uganda was investigated by Professor D. A. Low in this journal in 1964.1 He argued that the concept of populism was appropriate to describe the political agitation by the independent small landholders and poor peasants against the breakdown of the traditional hierarchical structure of Buganda under the impact of colonial rule. The populists were particularly concerned to reduce their economic disabilities through contr…

In contrast with some other East and Central African territories, Zambia offered little or no primary resistance to the imposition of colonial rule, but in other respects the country resembled neighbouring territories in the first three decades …
