Recursion beyond language: Lexical and arithmetic interference in visual hierarchical embedding
The capacity to represent recursive hierarchical embedding (RHE) is considered a hallmark of human cognition. Yet, it remains debated whether non-linguistic recursion depends on language-specific, domain-general, or independent visuospatial mechanisms. In two experiments, we tested this question using a dual-task paradigm. Participants performed either a visual recursion task (REC) or a matched visual iteration task (ITE) while concurrently engag…
A multi-generational approach to introducing technologies for assessing and supporting cognitive health in a rural, underresourced setting
Rural, older racially and ethnically diverse residents in rural areas in the southern U.S. have reported a strong sense of community, and desire to pursue healthy behaviors that promote aging in place. However, the ability to monitor health habits through wireless fitness devices is hindered in this underresourced area by lack of access and reduced literacy of mobile technology. A partnership between high school students, local faith-based health…

Text and Structural Data Mining of Influenza Mentions in Web and Social Media
Text and structural data mining of web and social media (WSM) provides a novel disease surveillance resource and can identify online communities for targeted public health communications (PHC) to assure wide dissemination of pertinent information. WSM that mention influenza are harvested over a 24-week period, 5 October 2008 to 21 March 2009. Link analysis reveals communities for targeted PHC. Text mining is shown to identify trends in flu posts …
Leibniz on ‘prophets’, prophecy, and revelation
During Leibniz's lifetime, interest in the interpretation of the Bible and biblical prophecy became central to the theological and political concerns of Protestant Europe. Leibniz's treatment of this phenomenon will be examined in the light of his views on the nature of revelation and its role in his defence of Christianity. It will be argued that Leibniz's defence of the miracle of revelation (and its vehicle, biblical prophecy) – unlike his arg…

James's "Ether Mysticism" and Hegel
James's "Ether Mysticism" and Hegel DANIEL J. COOK THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE, James was a persistent critic of Hegel and Hegelianism . Very often he attacked Hegel with derision as well as earnest argument. One attitude that has been cited as evidence of James's light-hearted and cavalier treatment of Hegel concerns his comments on Hegel while under the influence of nitrous oxide (N20). In this paper I wish to argue that such a view is misguided on sev…
