  • Heuristics

    Open Access•Julian N Marewski, Ulrich Hoffrage•ARTICLE•Mind & Society•2025•References: 7

Together with his co-workers, Herbert Simon developed a research program on heuristics in scientific discovery. Simon saw heuristics as both practical tools for problem-solving, as well as descriptive models of how scientists and others solve problems. Building on Simon’s hybrid notion of heuristics as tools and theories, we extend Simon’s study of heuristics in scientific discovery to scientific justification. This article makes two types of con…

  • Opium in science and society

    Open Access•Lutz Bornmann, Julian N Marewski•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2024

In science and beyond, quantifications are omnipresent when it comes to justifying judgments. Which scientific author, hiring committee-member, or advisory board panelist has not been confronted with page-long publication manuals, assessment reports, evaluation guidelines, calling for p -values, citation rates, h -indices, or other numbers to judge about the ‘quality’ of findings, applicants, or institutions? Yet, many of those of us relying on a…

  • Some Metatheoretical Reflections on Adaptive Decision Making and the Strategy Selection Problem

    Open Access•Julian N Marewski, Arndt Broder et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Organisms must be capable of adapting to environmental task demands. Which cognitive processes best model the ways in which adaptation is achieved? People can behave adaptively, so many frameworks assume, because they can draw from a repertoire of decision strategies, with each strategy particularly fitting to certain environmental demands. In contrast to that multi‐mechanism assumption, competing approaches posit a single decision mechanism. The…

  • Five Principles for Studying People’s Use of Heuristics

Julian N Marewski, Lael J Schooler et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2010

  • On the theoretical precision and strategy selection problem of a single‐strategy approach

    Open Access•Julian N Marewski•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2010•References: 1

According to the fast and frugal heuristics (FFH) program, humans make decisions by selecting from a repertoire of strategies. Glöckner, Betsch, and Schindler criticize such multi‐strategy frameworks for not explaining how people select between the different strategies. As an alternative, they propose a parallel constraint satisfaction (PCS) model that assumes a single strategy for all tasks. However, contrary to Glöckner et al.'s assertions, the…

  • The recognition heuristic in memory‐based inference

Open Access•Thorsten Pachur, Arndt Broder et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 2

The recognition heuristic makes the strong claim that probabilistic inferences in which a recognized object is compared to an unrecognized one are made solely on the basis of whether the objects are recognized or not, ignoring all other available cues. This claim has been seriously challenged by a number of studies that have shown a clear effect of additional cue knowledge. In most of these studies, either recognition knowledge was acquired durin…
