  • Bandwagon “Activism,” Uncritical Thinking, and the Ostracism of Jews in the Name of Progressive Anti-Zionism

    Open Access•Daniel Ian Rubin, Mara Lee Grayson•ARTICLE•Modern Judaism - A Journal of…•2025

The October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas changed the positionality of Jewish progressives in the United States. Left-leaning American Jews were suddenly viewed as politically conservative, right-wing, and even extremist by the same organizations they had supported and advocated for just days earlier. Many progressive activists and organizations, especially on college and university campuses, condemned Israel and shared anti-Zionist messages…

  • Beyond Racial, Religious, and Political Binaries

    Open Access•Mara Lee Grayson•ARTICLE•Journal of Reading Behavior•2024

Literacy studies scholarship and pedagogy have not attended comprehensively to Jewish cultural literacies or the discursive operations of anti-Jewish hate. As a result, antisemitic rhetoric may be employed, strategically or accidentally, by people who do not see themselves as antisemitic—and who, regardless of their critical and cultural literacies, cannot accurately identify that rhetoric as such. In this article, I draw upon existing research, …

  • Assimilation/Appropriation

    Mara Lee Grayson•ARTICLE•College Composition and…•2023

Drawing upon original post-structural phenomenological research, this article explores how Jewish discourses are pathologized and marginalized in rhet/comp spaces in ways that impact theorizing, pedagogy, professional interaction, and disciplinary knowledge production and how the academy’s white Christian hegemony reifies itself through these processes. As the limited assimilative success of Jewish people demonstrates, inclusion is not inherently…

  • Who Is It Really For? Trigger Warnings and the Maintenance of the Racial Status Quo

    Mara Lee Grayson•ARTICLE•College Composition and…•2022

This essay examines the discourse around the trigger warning through the analytic paradigm of racial literacy and the rhetorical frames of colorblind racism to illuminate how the trigger warning as currently conceptualized, even when framed as a means of equitable engagement, is mediated by and upholds the racial status quo

  • Information, Identity, and Ideology

Mara Lee Grayson•ARTICLE•Pedagogy Critical Approaches to…•2021

This article examines the role of critical reading in a racial literacy-focused composition curriculum. The author draws on student-produced data to demonstrate how the racial literacy curriculum prepares students to explore the situatedness of language, how individual positionalities influence the construction and interpretation of text, and how sociocultural ideologies are represented and disseminated through seemingly innocuous or objective re…

  • Race Talk in the Age of the Trigger Warning

Mara Lee Grayson•BOOK•Race Talk in the Age of the…•2020

To generate opportunities for transformative learning, educators must create learning environments that help students feel safe and encourage them to grapple with potentially difficult material. The trigger warning, a brief statement information students of potential distressing or re-traumatizing content, has been offered as a way to do just that, but this practice is neither as effective nor as equitable as it may seem. Intentionally or indirec…
