This essay examines selected writings of two Dominican moral theologians, Juan de Paz and Francisco Martinez, on questions related to indigenous marriage in the Spanish colonial Philippines. The work of Paz is set into the context of his activities as professor and rector of the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, an institution which prided itself on being a purveyor of Hispanic academic tradition.
