  • Investigation of Spatial and Cultural Features in Contemporary Qatari Housing

    Open Access•Asmaa Saleh Al-Mohannadi, Mark David Major et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Housing is a basic human need and a fundamental component of settlement status. The architectural form and spatial provisions of housing evolve in line with—and transform to meet—a specific era’s needs. Globalization has been responsible for changing the nature of housing in Qatar over the last thirty years. It has led to a standardization of construction methods and built form, representing a dramatic departure from past models of vernacular res…

  • Diving for the spatio-functional qualities of exclusivity at The Pearl-Qatar

    Open Access•Dana M Al-Amadi, Mark David Major et al.•ARTICLE•Habitat International•2023•References: 17

Rapid urbanization and globalization characterized Doha over the last half-century. Most research focuses on its urban expansion to the north, south, and west. However, urban development also occurred eastward into the Arabian Gulf via land reclamation projects for Al Corniche Road, West Bay, Hamad International Airport, portions of Lusail City, and The Pearl-Qatar. The last is a 400-hectare, US $15 billion artificial island development. It provi…

  • Tradition, Transformation, and Re-creation in Two Marketplaces: Souq Al Wakrah and Souq Waqif, Qatar

    Open Access•Abida H Khan, Abida Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Habitat International•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Traditional marketplaces are common in old city centers. Such places have a distinctive ambiance populated by local vendors, shoppers, visiting tourists, and pedestrians on their way to somewhere else. This genius loci or ‘collective spirit of place’ contributes to their character as destinations for people to visit and linger. They often serve as the focus of cultural heritage and historic preservation efforts in rapidly developing cities. The p…

  • Why the South Prevailed: Civil Rights, Anticommunism, and the Origins of the “Liberal Media”

Mark Major, Mark David Major•ARTICLE•New Political Science•2020•Cited by: 1

Contrary to conventional wisdom, Donald Trump’s public loathing toward the press is not an outlier in conservative political development; rather, he is part of a understudied tradition of conservative animosity toward the press. I examine aggression toward the news media in a broader historical context of the conservative movement by analyzing the origins of the idea of the “liberal media.” I argue that this idea develops in the “conservative cou…

  • The Dan Rather Maxim: Collective identity and news coverage of human rights and international law

    Open Access•Mark David Major•ARTICLE•Media War & Conflict•2016•References: 17

This article examines the influence of national identity on coverage of human rights and international law. Based on a content analysis of New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today’s coverage of torture at Abu Ghraib and the Obama administration’s expansion of drone warfare, it is argued that the news media largely protects the American identity by ignoring or marginalizing considerations of human rights and international law, despite these …

  • Polls and Elections: Swift Boating Reconsidered: News Coverage of Negative Presidential Ads

Open Access•Mark Major, Mark David Major et al.•ARTICLE•Presidential Studies Quarterly•2016•References: 10

Negative political ads are increasingly ubiquitous in presidential campaigns but most of the public do not directly observe these ads. Instead they become aware of these negative attacks through the press. Recent scholarship finds that the news media incentivizes presidential campaigns to go negative as it will generate more free coverage compared to positive advertisements. However, scholarship has yet to examine the framing of this free coverag…

  • Conservative Consciousness and the Press: The Institutional Contribution to the Idea of the 'Liberal Media' in Right-Wing Discourse

    Open Access•Mark Major, Mark David Major•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 17

This article examines the construction of conservative consciousness toward the establishment press, namely the articulation of the idea of the liberal media. Using discursive institutionalism and Nancy Fraser's critique of Habermas's conception of the public sphere as a theoretical lens, it is argued that the liberal media bias critique was developed and solidified in what the author calls the 'conservative counter-sphere', a sub-public sphere f…

  • Objective but Not Impartial: Human Events, Barry Goldwater, and the Development of the “Liberal Media” in the Conservative Counter-Sphere

Mark Major, Mark David Major•ARTICLE•New Political Science•2012•Cited by: 6

This article contends that we have little understanding of why the idea of the “liberal media” became an article of faith among conservatives. This study looks to the past by examining the construction of the “liberal media” in conservative thought to understand the present state of right-wing populism. The objective is not to determine whether the news media has a liberal bias, rather it is to understand the origins and development of this polit…
