  • Emma Prempeh

    Chika Okeke-Agulu, Chika Okeke–agulu•ARTICLE•Nka Journal of Contemporary…•2025

Born in England in 1996 of a Vincentian mother and Ghanaian father, Emma Prempeh's emerging practice as a painter is at once breathtaking, refreshing, and brimming with captivating confidence. Committed as she may be to the Black figure and to the compelling lives, stories, and memories it signifies and illustrates, what sets Prempeh apart is the idiosyncratic rigor of her pictorial tactics. Mostly given to a low-key, earthy, and dark viridian pa…

  • Wangechi Mutu’s Ecofeminist Vision in The End of Eating Everything

    Chika Okeke-Agulu, Chika Okeke–agulu•ARTICLE•Nka Journal of Contemporary…•2024

Commentators on Wangechi Mutu’s enigmatic animated video The End of Eating Everything (2015) claim that it depicts a gluttonous monster-woman with an insatiable appetite, devouring hapless birds. It is seen as a commentary on threat posed by ruthless global forces represented by the beast with a beautiful Black woman’s face. This article argues, instead, that the woman represents violated and polluted Earth, a victim of carnivorous birds, who, in…

In February 2020, the author spent a day with Penny Siopis in her studio at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, to discuss the artist’s new ink and wood-glue paintings, which she adopted in 2008 as her primary painting medium. This new direction is quite significant for an artist who, in the 1980s at the height of the antiapartheid movement, made ardently realistic figurative oil and mixed-media paintings that signified the…
