Landowners’ decisions on participating in a voluntary riparian tree-planting project in Norway
Recreational anglers in Norway report widespread dislike of invasive pink salmon
Pink salmon have returned to Norwegian rivers at high abundance in recent odd‐numbered years (2017, 2019, 2021, 2023), presenting potential threats to native biodiversity and ecosystem services, including major sport fishing tourism for Atlantic salmon and sea‐run brown trout in Norway. Presently, there exists a knowledge gap on angler perceptions and attitudes towards the presence of pink salmon in Norwegian rivers, resulting in difficulty asses…
The influence of motivation on birdwatcher satisfaction and destination loyalty
Research on motivation among birdwatchers and the relationships between motivation, satisfaction and destination loyalty may provide further insight into this subgroup of wildlife tourism participants. Research on other forms of wildlife tourism suggest that motivation can be a useful segmentation tool and have effects on participants’ overall experiences, satisfaction and loyalty. Using a survey (n =248) of visitors to Hornøya in Norway, we inve…
Broadening the scope of resources in nature
Nature-based tourism firms and other stakeholders often compete for the same resources. Knowledge of and access to resource bases are therefore essential for firms’ success. Nature-based tourism firms operate in nature areas, which, for the Nordics, may include human-made objects and intangibles. In this study, we therefore adopt a broad approach towards the concept of natural resources and include human-made, social, and cultural resources, term…
Centrality to life and the theory of planned behavior
Understanding relationships between centrality to life and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) may provide further insight on wildlife-related behaviors, as the literature suggests both have effects on behavioral intentions. Using a survey (n = 219) of participants at musk ox safaris in Dovrefjell Norway, we investigated relationships between centrality to life and TPB, as well as musk ox safari participation's perceived effects on intentions to…
Understanding Constraints and Facilitators to Salmon Angling Participation
Atlantic salmon sport fisheries have declined remarkably in many countries and participation seems to correlate with salmon abundance. We investigated angling participation in the Atlantic salmon sport fishery in Norwegian rivers by incorporating facilitators for participation in a constraint–negotiation model. We conducted an Internet survey of Norwegian anglers yielding 3,635 responses (40% response rate). The structural model confirmed our hyp…
The Influence of Norms and Consequences on Voluntary Catch and Release Angling Behavior
As catch and release angling (C&R) behavior increases, more knowledge is needed to understand the influence of norms and perceived consequences. Based on a survey of salmon anglers (n = 656) in Lakselv River, Norway, we showed that norms and awareness of consequences influence anglers’ behavioral intention of voluntarily releasing fish. Awareness of consequences had stronger impact on C&R behavior than the perceived social norm. The results from …
