  • Korea's Solidarity with the Global South (to Which It Didn't and Doesn't Belong)

    Open Access•Suweon Kim•ARTICLE•Pacific Focus•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 10

The Global South is a relational and collective identity of a group of states suffering colonialism and sharing particular material and normative traits. Drawing on an exploration of the historical path of Korea's Southern identity, or the lack thereof, this article explores the origins of Korea's diplomatic narrative of solidarity as a Southern donor. In the past, the Global South did not recognize Korea as one of “us” due to its security depend…

  • Korea-Japan cooperation in the Indo-Pacific strategy

Suweon Kim, Woochul Kang•ARTICLE•Journal of international area…•2024

  • Almost South–South solidarity

    Open Access•Suweon Kim•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2023•References: 16

This article illuminates the contours of digitalization in a less studied light of emotion. Based primarily on interviews of South African audiences consuming Korean digital creative contents, the research illustrates their affective responses, such as empathy and collective pride but also frustration. A particular focus goes to highly educated audiences characterized by the #RhodesMustFall movement in South Africa. Grounded in a theoretical fram…

  • Aggressive yet benign

    Suweon Kim•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Korea’s global strategy of disseminating its audio-visual products (AVPs) reflects developmentalism driven by short-term commercial motivation. In Africa, however, the Korean government distributes AVPs free of charge, sometimes in the form of foreign aid with the aim of creating a market in the long run. This paper suggests ‘granted developmentalism’ as an explanation for Korea’s expansion strategy into Africa. Whereas growing cultural transacti…

  • The misadventure of Korea Aid

    Suweon Kim•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 32

Korea Aid was a development project delivering Korean medical services, food and pop music via trucks to rural communities in Africa. The project was poorly conceived, vulnerable to corruption and ultimately ineffective. While Korea Aid marked a backward step for Korea’s development cooperation, revealing many of the challenges associated with emerging donors, it also reflected Korea’s aspiration to become a cultural and developmental alternative…

  • Who watches Korean TV dramas in Africa? A preliminary study in Ghana

    Open Access•Suweon Kim•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 5

More and more Ghanaians are watching Korean TV dramas. These are not just ordinary Ghanaians because they are from a particular socioeconomic bracket; they have a certain level of education, access to screen devices and Internet, accumulated previous experience of watching other foreign screen products and, most importantly, a peer network with those who can afford these items. Drawing from qualitative work and focus-group interviews, the article…
