Europeans from the Start? Slovenia and Croatia Between State-building, National Identity and the European Union
The article draws on Hansen and Wæver’s three-layered framework of state-nation-Europe, and applies it to Slovenia and Croatia. The aim is to examine how nation- and state-building affect these countries’ Europeanization before and after EU accession. The novelty of the contribution is the specific attention paid to the post-Yugoslav space as a reference for nation- and state-building. Our findings underline that the Slovenian and Croatian state-…

Return Procedures Applicable to Rejected Asylum-Seekers in the European Union and Options for their Regularisation
Due to the ongoing refugee crisis that escalated in 2015, thousands of decisions on international protection in the European Union have been issued, of which over 40 per cent were negative. This article focuses on the legal position of these rejected asylum-seekers in 17 European Union Member States, within the scope of return procedures that are carried out as a result of the said rejections, in accordance with the rules of the Return Directive.…

Building Democratic and Responsible Global Governance
The emergence and growth of international parliamentary institutions (IPIs) is a phenomenon that needs a comprehensive evaluation. Their members, parliamentarians, are increasingly interested in participating in these institutions, which explains the dynamic growth of IPIs over the last few decades. IPIs also have a long history. The first among them, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, was founded in 1889. As IPIs have the potential to establish them…
Mapping a Regional Institutional Architecture
Intra-regional international institutions are important for the development of a region because they facilitate its coherence and the build-up of common values. The Mediterranean region lacks a strong institutional infrastructure, which contributes to the fact that many states in the Mediterranean region, especially the poorer ones, play only a marginal role in Mediterranean affairs. Yet there are some positive developments. The analysis of the e…
Teaching International Studies from a Regional Perspective
Thanks to a suggestion made by Tim Shaw (Dalhousie University), the Editors of ISP decided about a year ago to commission a discussion of the textbook Power, Wealth and Global Order: An International Relations Textbook for Africa. This symposium aims at increasing our understanding of the different, regionally specific perspectives that can be brought to bear when studying international relations outside of North America and Western Europe. We wa…
The national identity of post-communist small states in the process of accession to the European Union
The article discusses, through conceptual elaboration and empirical investigation, the interplay between the perception of smallness and the concept of national identity in the case of Slovenia’s integration into the European Union. Unlike the prevailing literature on Slovenia, the authors do not take Slovenia’s smallness for granted. They argue that, in the particular case of Slovenian identity-building, smallness as an independent variable does…
