Speaking in Her Language
During the time he led the Conservative–Liberal Democrat Coalition Government, David Cameron used, in a highly selective and contestable manner, the kind of Thatcherite language with regard to deficit reduction which those on the right of the Conservative Party could relate to, and he did so in the interests of party unity. This argument is framed within the context of the limits of modernisation under Cameron’s leadership, and it emphasises the …
Ñ??ananda’s Concept and Reality
Bhikkhu Ñ??ananda’s Concept and Reality has exerted a certain influence on Buddhist Studies, from translations of the P?li Nik?yas to interpretations of doctrine. Far beyond proposing translations for papañca and papañca-saññ?sa?kh?, the book lays out a thesis, supported and illustrated by frequent citations from the Nik?yas, concerning the role of concepts and language itself in perpetuating bondage to sa?s?ra. Concepts and language are said to …
Touching from a Distance
It is argued here that the younger generation of One Nation Conservatives made a concerted effort to conform to the requirements of the free market agenda of the Thatcher governments during the 1980s. This served to distinguish them from the older generation of wets who had preceded them in the cabinet and who had been more inclined to engage in coded criticism of that agenda. The younger One Nation Conservatives knew that they had to conform if …
Reluctant Coalitionists
The Conservative party has been the real awkward partner in the Conservative‐Liberal Democrat coalition government because its backbench MPs have rebelled more frequently than their Liberal Democrat counterparts since May 2010. This reflected the fact that the Conservatives were reluctant coalitionists to begin with: they would have preferred to see a minority Conservative government, they had made far too many concessions to the Liberal Democrat…
Mother's Boy’
It is argued here that David Cameron has been heavily influenced by the example that Margaret Thatcher set with regard to leadership style, approach and rhetoric. The influence that she has exerted upon him may have become more marked in recent times, in response to the economic downturn and debt crisis, which has allowed Cameron to be more openly Thatcherite in his language, but he has always tried to follow in at least some of her footsteps. Th…
A Tiny Little Footnote in History’
In May 1985, two years after he had returned to the back benches, Francis Pym launched the first organised display of dissent within the parliamentary Conservative Party against Margaret Thatcher's leadership: Conservative Centre Forward. Those Conservative MPs who joined the group were very much believers in One Nation Conservatism. Conservative Centre Forward survived for barely a week after going public; it rapidly collapsed amid accusations o…
The Not So Odd Couple
This article explores the relationship between Margaret Thatcher and One Nation Conservatism, and suggests that they were not such an odd couple. Though not a One Nation Conservative herself, Thatcher always viewed One Nation Conservatism in terms of patriotism rather than paternalism. This was an equally potent tradition of One Nation thought which could also be traced back to Disraeli. Thatcher recognised this and she was quite prepared to expl…

Thatcher and the Victorians
One of the prevailing lines of commentary upon Thatcherism is that it possessed essentially Victorian attributes. Personally, similarities were posited between Margaret Thatcher and Sir Robert Peel, W. E. Gladstone and Lord Salisbury. Politically, Thatcherism was quintessentially Victorian because its mind‐set was cast in the nineteenth century. The word ‘Victorian’ was also used as a term of abuse by those, within and without the Conservative Pa…
Free Labour and Economic Performance
This paper examines the contribution of the Conservative government's 'free labour market' policies to recent productivity and economic performance, drawing on a detailed study of restructuring in the British construction industry. These policies are shown to have given a beneficial short-term boost to labour utilisation and cost reduction, which complemented improvements in managerial performance induced by more autonomous economic forces operat…
