Seigneurial institutions and Holland's seventeenth‐century miracle
This article revisits the claim that Holland owed much of its seventeenth‐century efflorescence to the absence of feudal constraints on its economy. Because Holland was relatively late to develop in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, it supposedly missed the European Feudal Revolution, thus opening space for an exceptional long‐run development. Whilst this view is correct for serfdom and landlordship, it is not for seigneurial lordship, another …

From the urban focus of the Paris Summer Olympics to the implications of the COP28 Climate Agreements for city resilience and sustainability, from housing crises and increasing wealth inequality to shifting gender dynamics and pivotal democratic elections, 2024 was notable in terms of poignant, global events. These developments influenced numerous academic narratives, further enriching and diversifying the ever-changing and increasingly multifacet…
Pre-1500
The year 2024 was a year of citizenship. In more than 80 countries around the world, enfranchised individuals went to cast their votes to elect new governments. The outcomes of those elections will be old news by the time this review is published, but they will continue to affect geopolitics for years to come, for better or worse. Our epoch is frequently lambasted as a unique time of political crisis, among other things because of growing anti-democ…

Traditions of Assembly in three Dutch ‘Lands’ in the Seventeenth Century
This article assesses the cultures of assembly in the Dutch global sphere of influence. It focuses on so-called landdagen (‘land days’), formal assemblies of Dutch provincial communities. While originating in the late medieval Low Countries, several such bodies were instituted in Dutch colonies in the seventeenth century. This article is the first to compare contemporary reflections on three such land days, namely that of the province of Guelders…

number of people who identified themselves by putting their name, signature or, at least, a mark under their petition grew significantly.Together with this quantitative evidence, Burnett develops a compelling qualitative line of reasoning.Intuitively, we would think that people put their names under the petition to support the community, but what if they saw their participation as a rather cheap way to gain social capital by buttressing their own…
Pre-1500
The subject that continued to preoccupy discussions within the international academic community in 2023 was, sadly, war.Still animated by Vladimir Putin's unrelenting invasion attempts in Ukraine, and galvanized in November by the severely renewed hostilities in Gaza between Hamas and the Israeli government under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu, the end-of-year period was dominated by heated debates, protests and occasionally violent clashes…

Towards a history of parliamentary culture in the early modern world
This article proposes an innovative approach to early modern representative institutions, from the later fifteenth century to the early eighteenth. It argues that only a transnational, interdisciplinary, and comparative study of such bodies can reveal their shared culture and prominence in contemporary political discourse, public memory, and cultural production. Central to this new approach is the concept of ‘parliamentary culture’, which sees re…
Waterbeheer en ideologische belangen in de premoderne Nederlanden
This article argues that the long-term development of premodern Dutch water management was partly shaped through a combination of institutional factors, and cultural norms and values. Departing from the institutional focus in the narrow sense that predominates in Milja van Tielhof’s Consensus and conflict, it makes the case that historians should take into account the influence of changes in the nature and ideology of the Dutch political elite be…

Early modern parliamentary studies
In this essay, we call for a new approach to representative assemblies of early modern Europe and beyond. While there are vast national historiographies on their legal constitutional structure, little effort has been made to reconstruct the cultural and transnational dimension of such bodies, a phenomenon we describe as ‘parliamentary culture’. We argue that there is much to be gained from an investigation of the culture surrounding these bodies‐…
Bargaining River Lords
This article offers an examination of the seigneurie (heerlijkheid) as an element in the institutional framework of Netherlandish water management. The investigation builds on a recent historiographical trend that questions whether inclusive systems of water management can be tied to ‘proto-democratic’ decision-making in the premodern Low Countries. Focusing on the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century river region of the duchy of Guelders, the centra…
Seigneurial governance and the state in late medieval Guelders (14th–16th century)
This article charts the long-term development of seigneurial governance within the principality of Guelders in the Low Countries. Proceeding from four quantitative cross-sections (c. 1325, 1475, 1540, 1570) of seigneurial lordships, the conclusion is that seigneurial governance remained stable in late medieval Guelders. The central argument is that this persistence of seigneurial governance was an effect of active collaboration between princely a…
Corporate collective action and the market cycle of the cloth industry in Nieuwkerke, Flanders, 1300–1600
This article addresses the connections between corporate collective action and economic development in the pre-industrial Low Countries. It focuses on a micro-historic case study: the textile industry of the village of Nieuwkerke in the county of Flanders. This rural cloth centre witnessed an exceptional industrial expansion between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. Following the recent proposition by Bas van Bavel that market economies fol…
