    Open Access•Kavita Vedhara, N Shanks et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2001•References: 29

An investigation was conducted to explore: (1) whether psychological and physical morbidity share similar psychosocial determinants; (2) the long-term stability of these determinants; and (3) the role of neuroticism in predicting psychological and physical morbidity. Fifty spousal caregivers of dementia patients were recruited into a 12-month study. Participants were followed up at six-monthly interva ls during which they completed scales measuri…

  • British Public Policy and the Health of Homeless People

    Nigel Shanks, N J Shanks et al.•ARTICLE•Policy & Politics•1992•Cited by: 9

There is growing concern among policy makers and the public about the well-documented increase in homelessness in late twentieth century Britain. This concern is fuelled by accumulating evidence that homelessness is hazardous to health, and by the discovery that homeless people often have limited access to primary medical care. There are, moreover, many very real ways in which homelessness is a public health issue and a source of health inequalit…

    N J Shanks•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1989•References: 11

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the characteristics of the homeless population and their previously diagnosed psychiatric illnesses in a well defined inner city area. DESIGN: The study involved a one in 10 sequential sample collected over three years. SETTING: Hostels and day care centres for the homeless in Manchester. PARTICIPANTS: 420 homeless people were interviewed; 17 were excluded because of lack of rapport. RESULTS:…

  • Medical morbidity of the homeless

    N J Shanks•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1988•Cited by: 4•References: 7

A prospective study was carried out over a three year period to assess the morbidity pattern of the homeless in Manchester. A principal diagnosis was recorded for each patient consultation during the delivery of primary health care to this population. The diagnoses were grouped and analysed in comparison with expected levels in the general population, both with and without adjustment for social class. Although the total numbers of annual consulta…

  • A new approach to tuberculosis notification

    N J Shanks, A Lambourne et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1984•Cited by: 1

A tuberculosis notification system was initiated which used several sources--the doctor, the diagnostic services of bacteriology, histopathology and radiology, and the pharmacy. The results of six months' notifications have shown that the pharmacy was by far the most complete source (74% of all new cases); doctors notified only 21% of all new cases. The combination of both doctors and the pharmacy was the most complete pair, notifying 85% of all …

  • Persistent tuberculous disease among inmates of common lodging houses

    N J Shanks, K B Carroll•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1984•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The initial chest x ray films in a series of sputum positive hostel dwellers showed considerably more advanced disease than in an age matched sputum positive population living under more conventional conditions. Furthermore, the mortality rate from tuberculosis was greatly increased among hostel dwellers. All organisms were found to be sensitive to standard antituberculosis drugs

  • Improving the identification rate of pulmonary tuberculosis among inmates of common lodging houses

    N J Shanks, K B Carroll•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1982•Cited by: 3•References: 2

An improvement in the identification of pulmonary tuberculosis among residents of common lodging houses has proved possible through the close co-operation of the doctor providing primary medical care, the mass miniature radiography services, and the wardens of the hostel where the proposed visit is to take place

  • Consistency of data collected from inmates of a common lodging house

    N J Shanks•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1981•Cited by: 5

The quality of data obtainable by questionnaire from residents of a common lodging house was explored by comparing the answers received by questioning such men on two or three occasions six months apart. Consistency between the answers obtained on different occasions was good for men who already knew the interviewer well as their medical officer but poor otherwise
