    Hans G P Jansen, Paul B Siegel et al.•BOOK•2006

With a population of seven million, Honduras is the second most populous country in Central America. It is also the second poorest country in the region with an annual per capita income of less than US$ 1,000. Two out of every three people in Honduras are poor (per capita income less than US$ 1.50/day); and three out of every four poor people are extremely poor (per capita income less than US$ 1.00/day). Social indicators such as child malnutriti…

Laura Murphy, Richard Bilsborrow et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1997

Household-level interview data from a probability sample survey conducted in the northeastern Ecuadorian Amazon in 1990 are used to examine the determinants of income and assets among migrant farmers in the agricultural frontier. Multivariate analysis indicates that size of plot owned, proximity to markets, duration of residence, quality of soil, receipt of technical assistance, off-farm employment and initial wealth positively influence current …

    Francisco J Pichón, Francisco Pichón•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1996

This article uses farm-level data to assess the role of ecological factors, household characteristics, and policy factors in shaping overall land-use strategies among settler farmers in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The survey data which form the basis for the analysis were collected by the author in 1990 from a probability sample of 450 colonist households. A descriptive cluster analysis is used to highlight the differences across and within the observ…

  • Agricultural Settlement and Ecological Crisis in the Ecuadorian Amazon Frontier

    Open Access•Francisco J Pichón, Francisco Pichón•ARTICLE•Policy Studies Journal•1992•Cited by: 13•References: 6

This article discusses several structural factors in the policy environment of Ecuador thought to determine the process of occupation by agricultural colonists of the country's segment of Amazonia and the emerging land settlement patterns in the region. These factors are fundamentally concerned with (a) national sovereignty interests over remote, peripheral territories characterized by low population density and ill‐defined land ownership, (b) th…
