Impact of downward longwave radiative deficits on Antarctic sea-ice extent predictability during the sea ice growth period
Forecasting Antarctic atmospheric, oceanic, and sea ice conditions on subseasonal to seasonal scales remains a major challenge. During both the freezing and melting seasons current operational ensemble forecasting systems show a systematic overestimation of the Antarctic sea-ice edge location. The skill of sea ice cover prediction is closely related to the accuracy of cloud representation in models, as the two are strongly coupled by cloud radiat…
Estimates of temporal-spatial variability of wildfire danger across the Pan-Arctic and extra-tropics
Satellite-based hot-spot analysis for the Pan-Arctic, shows that Asia experiences a greater number of fires compared to North America and Europe. While hot spots are prevalent through the year in Asia, Europe (North America) exhibits marked annual (semi-annual) variability. The Potential Fire Danger index (PFIv2) demonstrates increased fire incidence vulnerability across the Arctic and extra-tropics. Though not significant in northwestern North A…
The Selected Writings of William Hazlitt
William Hazlitt is viewed by many as one of the most distinguished of the non-fiction prose writers to emerge from the Romantic period. This nine-volume edition collects all his major works in complete form.
Nature and Value
This book brings together essays that individually and as a whole present a detailed and rigorous multidisciplinary exploration of the concept of nature and its wider ethical and political implications. The essays together present a revaluation of the natural world with a view to addressing some of the fundamental concerns of our time.

Whitman's Assumptions
Whitman's Song of Myself is one of the most original poems in the English language, and the evidence of an impulse utterly new in the American version of English. Its greatness comes from an idea of the self that is energetic, variable in its moods, and endlessly accessible to experience. The language of the poem—from declaration to catalogue to prayer—strives to afford a correlative to such personal qualities. The proof of its success comes with…
Scholarly Truth and the Hunger for Progress
Public trust in the academy has been waning for more than a generation now, and in that time, the public support of academic scholarship has been under an almost constant threat of drastic cuts. As accountability has been bureaucratized inside the university itself, scholarship has also come under the suspicious eye of cost-benefit accounting performed by external agencies. This narrow version of accountability may press so far against autonomy t…
Recent precipitation trends, flash floods and landslides in southern Brazil
In order to understand the rising number of flash floods and landslides in the densely populated region of southeastern Brazil, this study analyzes the spatial and temporal changes in precipitation from 1978 to 2014. We focus on the sensitivity of mountainous regions, specifically the Rio de Janeiro (RJMR) and Santa Catarina (SCMR) regions. Daily rainfall observations are aggregated into annual and seasonal indexes, and RClimdex is used to evalua…
Moral Imagination
Spanning many historical and literary contexts, Moral Imagination brings together a dozen recent essays by one of America's premier cultural critics. David Bromwich explores the importance of imagination and sympathy to suggest how these faculties may illuminate the motives of human action and the reality of justice. These wide-ranging essays address thinkers and topics from Gandhi and Martin Luther King on nonviolent resistance, to the dangers o…
The Cambridge Companion to British Literature of the French Revolution in the 1790s
The French Revolution ignited the biggest debate on politics and society in Britain since the Civil War 150 years earlier. The public controversy lasted from the initial, positive reaction to French events in 1789 to the outlawing of the radical societies in 1799. This Cambridge Companion highlights the energy, variety and inventiveness of the literature written in response to events in France and the political reaction at home. It contains thirt…

Disinterested Imagining and Impersonal Feeling
The utilitarian reduction of moral philosophy which divided all motives into the self-regarding and the other-regarding was put forward and elaborated in the writings of Mandeville, Hume, and Adam Smith. Reservations, it is true, about these principles of action may be found even among the writers who first propounded them. Hume said that the two sorts of motive permeate each other, and Smith believed that an impartial umpire, ‘the man in the bre…

Experiences of Scott's Northern Party
The six men of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Northern Party were stranded on Inexpressible Island (Fig 1) from late February to September 1912. During that period their lives were profoundly influenced by prevailing surface wind and sea ice conditions in Terra Nova Bay. Members of the party lived under the most primitive conditions, enduring more than seven months of strong, persistent winds. The western part of Terra Nova Bay remained largely fr…
Reflections on the Word Genius
T HIS ESSAY will try to say what can still be said for the idea of genius, but to do that one needs to define the word carefully, since from long disuse its outlines have grown indistinct. My procedure will be simple. I begin by illustrating two different emphases the word was made to bear in eighteenth-century discussions of art and knowledge-or, as it was then called, science. Following the broader of these emphases into the nineteenth century,…
