  • Lessons Learned from a Pilot Intergenerational Dance Program for Middle-Aged and Older Hispanic/Latino Adults and Children

John P Rech, Danae Dinkel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intergenerational…•2026

Intergenerational physical activity programs can be effective at increasing physical activity among adults and children. The purpose of this study was to explore the acceptability and implementation of an intergenerational dance program for Hispanic/Latino middle-aged and older adults (50+ years) and children (5–12 years) through focus groups. The four-week pilot intervention adapted the evidence-based dance program, BAILAMOSTM. Baseline and post…

  • Community Input for Addressing Dementia Health Disparities

Open Access•Faika Zanjani, Annie Rhodes et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2025

Background: The development of the Richmond Brain Health Initiative (RBHI) was guided by the need to address local brain health service gaps to improve Alzheimer's/Dementia health disparities in racially diverse communities. This paper describes the establishment of RBHI through 1) community and provider stakeholder input and 2) community brain health screening/intake development and testing. Methods: Phase 1 involved provider and community stake…

  • Acceptability of Intergenerational Physical Activity Programming

Open Access•Athena K Ramos, Danae Dinkel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2023•References: 3

Objective: This study explored Hispanic/Latino aging adults' interest in and preferences for intergenerational physical activity programming. Methods: We used an exploratory sequential (Qual-QUAN) mixed methods design consisting of three focus groups ( N = 13 participants; M age = 62.5 years old) and a quantitative survey ( N = 105 participants; M age = 57.3 years old). Results: We found that most participants were interested in intergenerational…

  • Biological and behavioral predictors of relative energy intake after acute exercise

  • Reducing Loneliness Among Aging Adults

    Open Access•Valerie K Jones, Michael D Hanus et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

The perception of feeling lonely is an influential factor in determining quality of life among aging adults. As the US Census Bureau projects that the number of Americans ages 65 and older will double by 2060, reducing loneliness is imperative. Personal voice assistants (PVAs) such as Amazon's Echo offer the ease-of-use of voice control with a friendly, helpful artificial intelligence. This study aimed to understand the influence of a PVA on lone…

  • Cognitive Training Gain as a Predictor of Mental Status

Julie Blaskewicz Boron, Sharon Willis et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 3

We examined the association of proximal and distal training gain to subsequent mental status ratings in 302 participants (M = 76.62 years) trained on inductive reasoning or spatial orientation in the Seattle Longitudinal Study. Only training effects on reasoning ability were predictive of mental status group membership. Participants subsequently rated as probably demented did not significantly differ from nondemented participants in magnitude of …

  • Effects of Cognitive Training on Change in Accuracy in Inductive Reasoning Ability

Julie Blaskewicz Boron, Nicholas A Turiano et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 3

We investigated cognitive training effects on accuracy and number of items attempted in inductive reasoning performance in a sample of 335 older participants (M = 72.78 years) from the Seattle Longitudinal Study. We assessed the impact of individual characteristics, including chronic disease. The reasoning training group showed significantly greater gain in accuracy and number of attempted items than did the comparison group; gain was primarily d…
