  • The Spacetimes of the Scythian Dead

    Open Access•James Allen Johnson•ARTICLE•Arts•2024

The Eurasian Iron Age Scythians, in all their regional iterations, are known for their lavish burials found in various kinds of tumuli. These tumuli, of varying sizes, are located throughout the Eurasian steppe. Based, at least partially, on the amounts and types of grave goods found within these mounds, the Scythians are usually modeled as militant, patriarchal mobile pastoralists, with rigid social structures. Yet, such interpretations are also…

  • Customizing Health Security Preparedness Activities in Sub-Saharan Africa

Richard G Greenhill, James Allen Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Public…•2022

The International Health Regulations (IHR) continue to be one of the driving forces behind health security preparedness in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). While progress has been made, there is still much work to do for these nations to meet IHR standards. Policy implementation and development activities tend to employ “best practices” with little emphasis on the institutional factors (e.g., cultural, social, and political) that would sustain them. Thi…

  • Portuguese American gay men in southeastern Massachusetts

Kathleen Jordan, Kathleen M Jordan et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2016

We employed a phenomenological study design with eight men to provide a more in-depth analysis of their sociocultural sexual behaviours. Recruitment was conducted through word of mouth and a snowball approach beginning with two well-known HIV education and prevention outreach centres in southeaster…

  • Meeting the Challenge

    Open Access•Rupert M Evans, Rupert Evans et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2013

Minority enrichment programs play a vitally important role in current efforts to increase the number of health care providers from underrepresented racial and ethnic populations and other disadvantaged groups. However, the existence of minority enrichment programs is challenged by recent changes in the political and economic environment, including the sharp reduction of federal funding support in 2006. This article presents case studies of two lo…

  • Aids

Walter J Jones, James Allen Johnson•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•1989

The development and spread of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in American urban areas is challenging established policy making structures and patterns in a variety of ways. AIDS is forcing urban policymakers to engage in unusual efforts at large and nonincremental change while possessing relatively little understanding of the ultimate nature and course of the disease. A variety of uncertainties exist, involving the future scope and deve…
