Modern Bird Hunting in the Arctic
Ethnocultural Landscape Zoning of Traditional Reindeer Husbandry in the Context of Municipalities of the Russian Federation
Traditional reindeer husbandry is a specific form of nature management for many northern peoples, and their way of life and original culture are based on it. It is an essential part of their intangible cultural heritage. Despite the fact that many ethnological studies are devoted to reindeer husbandry, it has not yet received adequate understanding in terms of the theory of the cultural landscape and zoning of the ethnocultural environment. This …

Assessment of Climatic Conditions for Siberian Reindeer Herding on the Basis of Heat Balance Modelling
The purpose of the research is to assess suitable climatic conditions for traditional herding of reindeer by Indigenous people in different areas of Siberia. A сomputer simulation model allowed us to calculate reindeer’s heat balance according to a number of meteorological indices; it was used to assess climatic conditions in 70 localities. To show the impact of climatic conditions on reindeer’s well-being, we introduce the notion of the thermal …
Energy of Reindeer Breeding
Sustainability of socio-ecological systems is ensured, firstly, through relatively powerful energy flows associated with the interaction of material components, and secondly, through the low energy controlling impacts that drive these flows. Reindeer herding is based on traditional patterns of controlling the flow of biological matter and energy that have developed in different ethnic communities and different types of geographic landscapes (“tun…
Substitution and Continuity in Southern Chukotka Traditional Rituals
The village of Meinypilgyno is located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in southern Chukotka. In the past, some of its inhabitants were engaged in reindeer herding on the tundra, while others fished. However, 20 years ago, during the economic crisis that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, reindeer herding was lost. However, the Chukchi of Meinypilgyno did not stop performing their main reciprocity ritual. Instead, they substituted small…

Reindeer Herders’ Communities of the Siberian Taiga in Changing Social Contexts
In recent decades the number of domestic reindeer stock across indigenous communities in the Siberian taiga have fallen dramatically. While this has been viewed as a crisis, this paper discusses how reindeer herders are adjusting their traditional herding strategies to modern conditions. A methodology of contextualization is used to evaluate five reindeer herders’ communities situated in different regions of Eastern Siberia. Changes in Siberian r…
Demographic and economic disparities among Arctic regions
We use demographic and economic indicators to analyze spatial differences and temporal\ntrends across 18 regions surrounding the Arctic Ocean. Multifactor and cluster analysis\nwere used on 10 indicators reflecting income, employment and demography from 1995\nto 2008. The main difference is between regions with high population densities, low\nnatural growth rate, and low unemployment (Russia, Norway and Iceland) and regions\nwith high unemploymen…
Ethnoecological assessment of the impact of industrial development on the traditional natural management of indigenous peoples of the north
Integration of the materials of ethnoecological expert surveys on the impact of industrial development on the traditional natural management of Northern peoples accumulated by the authors permitted to discuss some theoretical provisions. Ethnoecological assessments make the core of a wider concept, i.e., ethnological assessments, which, together with ethnoecological ones, may also cover social and cultural issues. The object of ethnoecological as…

Northern reindeer of Taymyr Okrug as the focus of economic activity
Differing systems for the utilization of wild and domestic reindeer in the Taymyr Autonomous Okrug are examined in four "ethno‐economic"; areas—the Dolgan, Nenets, Nganasan, and Evenki. Particular attention is devoted to whether the primary focus is upon hunting wild reindeer or herding domesticated animals. Subsequent sections of the paper examine changes in the condition of pasture for domestic and wild reindeer, the effects of commercial hunti…
