The learning effects of first, second, and third order interventions in a rule-based and open simulation game
The aim of this study is to find out what the effects of facilitated learning interventions in a simulation game (SG) are and what type of SG renders which type of learning. Therefore, we research the effects of facilitator interventions on learning in an analogue open SG (in which there are as few rules as possible) and an analogue rule based SG (in which every decision is rule based). In both SGs the learning goal was to increase participants’ …
Socio-technical infrastructure interdependencies and their implications for urban sustainability; recent insights from the Netherlands
Cities are increasingly recognized as potential motors of sustainability transitions. These transitions build on existing as well as new infrastructures, and these infrastructures mutually influence each other in many ways, a phenomenon known as infrastructure interdependencies. These infrastructure interdependencies have significant implications for both enabling or restricting urban sustainability transitions but their implications remain under…
Using Systems Dynamics for Capturing the Multicausality of Factors Affecting Health System Capacity in Latin America while Responding to the Covid-19 Pandemic
Similar interventions to stop the spread of COVID-19 led to different outcomes in Latin American countries. This study aimed to capture the multicausality of factors affecting HS-capacity that could help plan a more effective response, considering health as well as social aspects. A facilitated GMB was constructed by experts and validated with a survey from a wider population. Statistical analyses estimated the impact of the main factors to the H…
Accountability and Coalitions: Evidence from a Negotiation Experiment
This article tests the effect of accountability on negotiation outcomes in a face‐to‐face classroom experiment. Student participants were asked to form coalitions in groups of three. In the treatment condition, negotiators were held accountable by a personal forum during the formation of the coalition. In the control condition, negotiators were not held accountable. Results show that accountability leads to lower group performance in coalition ne…
Developing an effective adaptive monitoring network to support integrated coastal management in a multiuser nature reserve

Group Model‐Building ‘Scripts’ as a Collaborative Planning Tool
Group model building (GMB) is a participatory method for involving stakeholders in the process of developing system dynamics models. GMB has historically consisted of undocumented structured small‐group exercises. This paper describes an effort to document GMB scripts called Scriptapedia, and how documented GMB scripts can be used to design more effective GMB sessions that address cultural and ideological barriers to collaboration. A case study o…
The Role of Ecological Science in Environmental Policy Making: From a Pacification toward a Facilitation Strategy
Hanssen, L., E. Rouwette, and M. M. van Katwijk. 2009. The role of ecological science in environmental policy making: from a pacification toward a facilitation strategy. Ecology and Society 14(1): 43. https://doi.org/10.5751/ES-02884-140143
Group model building effectiveness: A review of assessment studies
Over the last decades system dynamicists have experimented with approaches to achieve more involvement of their clients in the model building process. As a result the number of reports in the literature on the use of system dynamics as an organizational intervention tool has increased dramatically. From the literature we have identified 107 cases that provide details on the modeling process and the assessment of results. The cases show a wide var…
