Objectives. To determine the number and type of US workers taking maternity or paternity leave. Methods. Results. The average month from 1994 to 2015 saw 273 000 women and 13 000 men on maternity or paternity leave. Maternity leave rat…

  • Does Asthma Impair Wealth Accumulation or Does Wealth Protect Against Asthma

    Open Access•Jay L Zagorsky, Jay Zagorsky et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 33

Objective We investigate the association between adult asthma and wealth, testing whether the disease impairs wealth accumulation (social selection model) or if wealth protects against asthma (social causation model). Methods We use the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth ( n = 7,644) and linear and logistic regressions to estimate the association between wealth and asthma. Changes in relative wealth following an asthma diagnosis and asthma sta…

  • Wealth and Weight

Jay L Zagorsky, Jay Zagorsky•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Economics and…•2015

The average person’s weight is climbing as the world grows richer. This chapter investigates the relationship between wealth and weight. Cross-national macro data (1995–2005) analysis finds a small, positive, statistically significant relationship; a 10 percentage point increase in a country’s wealth is associated with an absolute body mass index (BMI) increase of 0.03 points (a 0.13% change). US micro data from the National Longitudinal Survey o…

  • Marriage and divorce's impact on wealth

    Open Access•Jay L Zagorsky, Jay Zagorsky•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2005•Cited by: 45•References: 14

What impact do marriage and divorce have on wealth? US data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79), which tracks individuals in their 20s, 30s and early 40s, show that over time single respondents slowly increase their net worth. Married respondents experience per person net worth increases of 77 percent over single respondents. Additionally, their wealth increases on average 16 percent for each year of marriage. Divorced respond…

  • The wealth effects of smoking

    J L Zagorsky, Jay Zagorsky•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2004

  • Job Vacancies in the United States

Jay L Zagorsky, Jay Zagorsky•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1998

Empirical investigations of the U.S. macroeconomy often examine only the post-World War II period because very few key data series exist for earlier years. However, this brief time period misses major economic shocks like the Great Depression and World War II. Using a previously unknown data set, this paper solves part of the problem by creating a long-run job vacancy series from 1923 to 1994 based on help-wanted advertising data. Analysis sugges…
