Rural‐urban differences in uptake of diabetes self‐management education among Medicare beneficiaries
PURPOSE: To assess rural-urban differences in participation rates of diabetes self-management education and associated factors among Medicare beneficiaries with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). METHODS: Data were from the 2016 to 2018 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS). Participation in diabetes self-management education was self-reported. Associations between shopping patterns, dietary behaviours and geographic information system-assessed store accessibility among small food store customers
Objective: To examine associations between geographic information systems (GIS)-assessed accessibility to small food stores, shopping patterns and dietary behaviours among small food store customers. Design: Residential addresses and customer shopping patterns (frequency of shopping, and previous purchase of fruits and vegetables) were gathered through customer intercept surveys. Addresses were geocoded, and GIS-assessed distance and driving time…
Associations between farmers’ market shopping behaviours and objectively measured and self-reported fruit and vegetable intake in a diverse sample of farmers’ market shoppers
Objective: To examine cross-sectional associations between farmers’ market shopping behaviours and objectively measured and self-reported fruit and vegetable (FV) intake among rural North Carolina (NC) and New York City (NYC) shoppers. Design: Cross-sectional intercept surveys were used to assess self-reported FV intake and three measures of farmers’ market shopping behaviour: (1) frequency of purchasing FV; (2) variety of FV purchased and (3) do…

Geofencing
PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to assess the use of geofence technology to raise awareness of a dental clinic in rural North Carolina. METHODS: The catchment area of the dental clinic was defined by ZIP Codes. A geofence was identified, and cell phones within the perimeter were targeted for oral health message drops to occur over 3 months from April to June 2017. Surveys conducted twice, pre- and postintervention (message drop), evaluated …
Influenza and Pneumonia Vaccinations among North Carolina Adults with Diabetes
Objectives: In this study, we sought to elucidate the influenza and pneumonia vaccination practices of adults with diabetes in North Carolina. Methods: Using North Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, we examined 2011-2018 trend data and demographic and health factors (2014-2018) in influenza (influenza vaccine receipt in the past year among adults ages 18+ years) and pneumonia (lifetime pneumonia vaccination receipt for adul…
Examining Shopping Patterns, Use of Food-Related Resources, and Proposed Solutions to Improve Healthy Food Access Among Food Insecure and Food Secure Eastern North Carolina Residents
In the Southern United States (U.S.), food insecurity rates are higher in rural (20.8%) versus urban communities (15%). Food insecurity can exacerbate diet-related disease. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine differences in the use of food-related community resources and potential solutions proposed among food insecure versus food secure residents. A community survey ( n = 370) was conducted in rural eastern North Carolina, with questi…
Health Inequities among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults in North Carolina, 2011–2014
Inequalities in health have been identified for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) populations nationally. Policies in the U.S. South offer fewer protections for LGB people than in other regions, yet, limited data exist for this region. North Carolina (NC) BRFSS data from 2011 to 2014 were combined (LGB n = 604; heterosexual n = 33,170) and analyzed using SAS survey procedures to estimate health characteristics by sexual orientation within gender. …

Firearm presence and storage practices in North Carolina homes
Firearms injuries are a leading cause of injury and death in North Carolina, including suicide, homicide, intentional assault, and unintentional injuries. Research has demonstrated that the presence of a firearm in a household increases the risk for homicide and suicide. This study examined two firearms-related risk factors, the presence of a firearm in the household and risky storage practices (loaded and unlocked), using the 2011 North Carolina…
Health Communication as a Public Health Training and Workforce Development Issue
Effective communication is one of the core competencies for public health professionals and is required for local health department (LHD) accreditation. Public health communication specialists play a critical role as conduits of health information, particularly with regard to managing relationships with media and the message that is ultimately represented by news outlets. However, capacity for engagement with traditional media in community health…
Temporal and Regional Trends in the Prevalence of Healthy Lifestyle Characteristics
Objectives. We examined temporal and regional trends in the prevalence of health lifestyles in the United States. Methods. We used 1994 to 2007 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to assess 4 healthy lifestyle characteristics: having a healthy weight, not smoking, consuming fruits and vegetables, and engaging in physical activity. The concurrent presence of all 4 characteristics was defined as a healthy overall lifestyle. We …
Public Awareness and Use of Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Tests
We conducted population-based surveys on direct-to-consumer nutrigenomic testing in Michigan, Oregon, and Utah as part of the 2006 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Awareness of the tests was highest in Oregon (24.4%) and lowest in Michigan (7.6%). Predictors of awareness were more education, higher income, and increasing age, except among those 65 years or older. Less than 1% had used a health-related direct-to-consumer genetic test. P…

Child malnutrition in rural Kenya
This article uses data from the 1978–79 Rural Child Nutrition Survey in Kenya, linked to agricultural data on 2,583 households from the Integrated Rural Surveys, to estimate the extent of chronic malnutrition among children in sub‐populations classified by province, occupation, landholding and cropping pattern. Child malnutrition is the worst in Coast and Nyanza Provinces, especially in the families of smallholders. There is some evidence that ho…
