Late Quaternary alluvial fan stratigraphy and chronology, Elqui, Turbio and Claro valleys, semiarid Andes of Chile
US-Mexico binational Covid-19 cases in southern California border counties, California, February–June 2020
Binational cases had different trends than non-binational cases of SARS-CoV-2 in San Diego and Imperial counties from February to June 2020. Findings could inform SARS-CoV-2 mitigation strategies specific to the US-Mexico land border, particularly recommendations regarding cross-border land travel
Chronofunctions for new Mexico, USA soils show relationships among climate, dust input, and soil development

Linking Holocene hydrologic events with episodic periods of fluvial deposition and soil formation, Santa Catalina Island, California
Timing and distribution of alluvial fan sedimentation in response to strengthening of late Holocene Enso variability in the Sonoran Desert, Southwestern Arizona, USA
The integration of geomorphic mapping, soil stratigraphy, and radiocarbon dating of alluvial deposits offers insight to the timing, magnitude, and paleoclimatic context of Holocene fan sedimentation near Yuma, Arizona. Mapping of 3400 km 2 indicates about 10% of the area aggraded in the late Holocene and formed regionally extensive alluvial fan and alluvial plain cut-and-fill terraces. Fan deposits have weakly developed gravelly soils and yielded…
Oxygen isotope ratios in Holocene carbonates across a climatic gradient, eastern Washington State, USA
Oxygen isotope ratios of pedogenic carbonates were analyzed along a climatic gradient in the Palouse region of eastern Washington State to evaluate changes in their isotopic composition with changing climate. A modern analog approach was used to assess the relationship between the istotope ratios in the pedogenic carbonates with those in soil water (measured in June when we anticipated carbonate formation might occur because of low soil water con…
Holocene environmental change and vegetation contraction in the Sonoran Desert
Two types of microtopographic features ( plant scar mounds and plant scar depressions ) on surfaces of barren desert pavements provide a unique record of the former presence of large perennial plants. Evidence of bioturbation by burrowing animals extends more than 1 m beneath each type of plant scar, indicating that both features originated as large bioturbation mounds. Formation of bioturbation mounds in desertscrub environments is generally res…

Late Quaternary stratigraphy of loess in the Channeled Scabland and Palouse regions of Washington state
Loess deposits of late Quaternary age in the Channeled Scabland and western Palouse regions of Washington state contain distinctive sequences of calcic buried soils, loess layers, tephra layers, and stratigraphic unconformities caused by cataclysmic flooding. Four new soil-stratigraphic units, the Sand Hills Coulee Soil, Washtucna Soil, Old Maid Coulee Soil, and the Devils Canyon Soil, are recognized across a 100-km transect. The pedostratigraphi…
Correlation of Distal Tephra Layers in Loess in the Channeled Scabland and Palouse of Washington state
Thirty-two distal tephra layers that are interbedded in Quaternary loess at 13 sites in the Channeled Scabland and Palouse were sampled as part of a regional study of the stratigraphy and chronology of dominantly windblown sediments on the Columbia Plateau. An electron microprobe was used to determine the elemental composition of volcanic glass in all of the samples and also to determine the composition of ilmenite in 14 of them. Two of the dista…
