  • Treeline history in Northwestern Chukotka during the Last Interglacial and Holocene

Open Access•Sergey Vartanyan, Gleb Danilov et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2025•Cited by: 1

  • Holocene vegetation history of western Chukotka (Northeastern Asia) inferred from pollen records

    Open Access•D V Petrov, A A Andreev et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2025•References: 1

  • Final years of life and seasons of death of woolly mammoths from Wrangel Island and mainland Chukotka, Russian Federation

    Open Access•Joseph J El Adli, Daniel C Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 6

  • Validation of Radiocarbon Dates of Woolly Mammoth Remains from Northwestern Chukotka, Russia

    Open Access•Sergey Vartanyan, Sergey L Vartanyan•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 10

This paper presents the results of cross-dating of mammoth remains from northwestern Chukotka, northeastern Siberia. Our results suggest that several dates obtained by the radiocarbon laboratory at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk (laboratory code SOAN) appear to be too recent. Cross-dating in different laboratories revealed significant differences in the ages obtained compar…

  • Collection of radiocarbon dates on the mammoths ( Mammuthus Primigenius ) and other genera of Wrangel Island, northeast Siberia, Russia

    Open Access•Sergey Vartanyan, Sergey L Vartanyan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

We present and discuss a full list of radiocarbon dates for woolly mammoth and other species of the Mammoth fauna available from Wrangel Island, northeast Siberia, Russia. Most of the radiocarbon dates are published here for the first time. Of the124 radiocarbon dates on mammoth bone, 106 fall between 3700 and 9000 yr ago. We believe these dates bracket the period of mammoth isolation on Wrangel Island and their ultimate extinction, which we attr…

  • Carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses of a juvenile woolly mammoth tusk: Evidence of weaning

    Open Access•Adam N Rountrey, Daniel C Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2007

  • Paleoclimatic implications of oxygen isotopic variation in late Pleistocene and Holocene tusks of Mammuthus primigenius from northern Eurasia

    Open Access•David L Fox, Daniel C Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2006•Cited by: 11•References: 7

  • Pleistocene raised marine deposits on Wrangel Island, northeast Siberia and implications for the presence of an East Siberian ice sheet

Open Access•Lyn Gualtieri, Sergey Vartanyan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

Two previously undocumented Pleistocene marine transgressions on Wrangel Island, northeastern Siberia, question the presence of an East Siberian or Beringian ice sheet during the last glacial maximum (LGM). The Tundrovayan Transgression (459,000–780,000 yr B.P.) is represented by raised marine deposits and landforms 15–41 m asl located up to 18 km inland. The presence of high sea level 64,000–73,000 yr ago (the Krasny Flagian Transgression) is pr…

  • Consensus Dating of Mammoth Remains from Wrangel Island

    Open Access•Kh A Arslanov, G T Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•References: 4

Previous results from remains of tusks, teeth and bones collected from Wrangel Island (Vartanyan et al . 1995) had given results in the range 3730 bp to 20,000 bp and the authors had concluded that “mammoths inhabited Wrangel Island for as long as 6000 yr after the estimated extinction on the Siberian continent”. There still remained the question of the earliest date for such remains. Further, the authors had noted such samples may present some d…
