A Late-Holocene pollen record from the coastal Mkhuze swamp, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Pollen analysis was conducted on core materials that were deposited over the last 2000 cal years BP in Mkhuze wetland, KwaZulu-Natal. The objective was to reconstruct past vegetation and infer past changes in climate or possible human disturbances by enhancing both pollen and non-pollen proxy data in the summer rainfall region. Palynological results show a dominance of Poaceae (grasses >70%) that suggests a predominance of grassy vegetation in an…
Timing of peat initiation across the central Congo Basin
The central Congo Basin contains the world’s most extensive tropical peatland complex, spanning 16.7 million hectares. Until now, radiocarbon dating of basal peats has been limited to 14 samples with poor spatial coverage, and suggested that peat typically initiated during the Holocene. We present 38 new basal dates, improving spatial coverage across the region. Some of the new basal dates are much older than any previous dates, indicating that p…
Vegetation and climate dynamics in a 16,600-year marine sequence offshore Mozambique in Delagoa Bight, south-eastern Africa
Climate and land-use effects on hydrological and vegetation signals during the last three millennia
The southwest of Morocco is considered to be an area of refuge within the Mediterranean region, hosting the endemic tropical Argan tree. This region is presently subject to severe droughts, desertification and land degradation, and likely facing increased climate variability and socio-economic stress in the future. Here, we use the stable hydrogen and carbon isotope composition (δD and δ 13 C) of plant-waxes in a high-resolution marine sediment c…
Holocene hydrologic and vegetation developments in the Orange River catchment (South Africa) and their controls
The summer rainfall zone (SRZ) in the South African interior experienced pronounced hydrological and vegetation changes during the Holocene inferred to be driven mainly by shifts in atmospheric and oceanic circulations systems. The exact mechanisms controlling these changes are still debated. To gain better insights into the Holocene environmental changes in the South African SRZ and their driving factors, we analysed compound-specific carbon and…
Late-Holocene oceanic variability in the southern Benguela region driven by interplay of upwelling, fluvial discharge, and Agulhas leakage
The southern Benguela upwelling system near the St. Helena Bay has been proposed to be affected by various factors, while few investigations about the late-Holocene oceanic conditions has been carried out in this area. To determine the oceanic variability and its forcing mechanisms in the southern Benguela region during the late-Holocene, we examined organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) records from two marine sediment cores located in t…
Late-Holocene dynamics of sea-surface temperature and terrestrial hydrology in southwestern Africa
Southwest Africa is an important region for paleo-climatic studies, being influenced by both tropical and temperate climate systems and thus reflecting the interplay of variable controls. The aim of this study was to unravel the interaction of sea-surface temperature (SST) changes in the southernmost Benguela upwelling system with precipitation changes in South Africa’s winter rainfall zone (WRZ) during the late Holocene. Therefore, a marine sedi…
Investigation of organic matter and biomarkers from Diepkloof Rock Shelter, South Africa
Holocene paleo-climatic record from the South African Namaqualand mudbelt
Holocene vegetation and climate variability in the winter and summer rainfall zones of South Africa
To better understand Holocene vegetation and hydrological changes in South Africa, we analyzed pollen and microcharcoal records of two marine sites GeoB8331 and GeoB8323 from the Namaqualand mudbelt offshore the west coast of South Africa covering the last 9900 and 2200 years, respectively. Our data corroborate findings from literature that climate developments apparently contrast between the summer rainfall zone (SRZ) and winter rainfall zone (W…
Palynological evidence for climatic and oceanic variability off NW Africa during the late Holocene
Pollen and organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from core GeoB 9503-5 retrieved from the mud-belt (∼ 50 m water depth) off the Senegal River mouth have been analyzed to reconstruct short-term palaeoceanographic and palaeoenvironmental changes in subtropical NW Africa during the time interval from ca. 4200 to 1200 cal yr BP. Our study emphasizes significant coeval changes in continental and oceanic environments in and off Senegal and sho…
High-resolution last deglaciation record from the Congo fan reveals significance of mangrove pollen and biomarkers as indicators of shelf transgression
High abundances of mangrove pollen have been associated with transgressive cycles on tropical margins, but the detailed relations between systems tracts and the taphonomy of the pollen are unclear. We report here the occurrence and high abundance of Rhizophora pollen, in association with taraxerol, a Rhizophora -sourced biomarker, from a high-resolution Congo fan core covering the last deglaciation. An age model based on 14 C dates enables the te…
