  • A Localized Evaluation of Surface Water Quality Using GIS-Based Water Quality Index along Satpara Watershed Skardu Baltistan, Pakistan

Open Access•Ali Muhammad, Donghui Shangguan et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2024

Surface water quality in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, is of immense importance because of the city’s dependence on these resources for domestic uses, agriculture, and drinking water. The water quality index (WQI) was integrated with the Geographic Information System (GIS) to spatially envision and examine water quality data to facilitate the identification of pollution hotspots, trend analysis, and knowledge-based decision-making for effec…

  • Different characteristics of two surges in Weigeledangxiong Glacier, northeastern Tibetan Plateau

Open Access•Baotian Pan, Weijin Guan et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Glacier surge is a special form of glacier displacement caused by the instability of the glacial dynamic system. It is a quasi-periodic oscillation behavior, which affects the estimation of the overall change of glaciers in the region and potentially threatens the infrastructure and human life in the downstream regions. Most glaciers experience a mass loss with rising air temperatures in recent decades, but little attention has been paid to the i…

  • Dynamics of Land Use and Land Cover Changes in An Arid Piedmont Plain in the Middle Reaches of the Kaxgar River Basin, Xinjiang, China

Open Access•Tianfeng Wei, Wei Tianfeng et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2020

The Kaxgar River Basin, a key section of the Tarim River Basin, is a typical ecologically fragile region that has undergone rapid changes to its spatial patterns over the preceding few decades. In particular, the expansion of salinized land has posed a severe threat to ecological restoration and economic development. This study monitored the rates and patterns of land use and land cover (LULC) changes in the plain area of Aketao County in the mid…

  • Glacial Lake Inventory Derived from Landsat 8 OLI in 2016–2018 in China–Pakistan Economic Corridor

Open Access•Da Li, Donghui Shangguan et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2020

The China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a key hub for trade, is susceptible to glacial lake outburst floods. The distributions and types of glacial lakes in the CPEC are not well documented. In this study, cloud-free imagery acquired using the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager during 2016–2018 was used to delineate the extent of glacial lakes in the mountainous terrain of the CPEC. In the study domain, 1341 glacial lakes (size ≥ 0.01 km2) wi…

  • Changes in the glacier extent and surface elevation along the Ningchan and Shuiguan river source, eastern Qilian Mountains, China

Open Access•Bo Cao, Baotian Pan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

We investigate the changes at nine glaciers in the Ningchan and Shuiguan river source, eastern Qilian Mountains, between 1972 and 2010. According to analysis of topographic maps and multispectral satellite data, all nine glaciers in the study area have retreated, by a maximum of 250 ± 57.4 m and a minimum of 91 ± 57.4 m. The total glacier area decreased by 1.20 km 2 , corresponding to 9.9% of the glacierized area in 1972. Comparing the two DEMs g…
