Holocene glacial evolution in Quingaussarsuaq Peninsula (Central–West Greenland)
The Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) is a key component of the global climate system, and constraining the Holocene deglaciation history of its land-terminating margins is key to understanding its sensitivity to climate forcing. Here, we provide insights into landscape evolution and environmental change on the Qinguassarsuaq Peninsula, Central–West Greenland 69°N, 50°W, where we used high-resolution geomorphological surveys and extensive field mapping …
Glacial–interglacial cycles in the south-central and southeastern Pyrenees since ~180 ka (NE Spain–Andorra–S France)
This study uses luminescence and 14 C accelerator mass spectrometry procedures to date relevant glaciofluvial and glacial deposits from the south-central and southeastern Pyrenees (Andorra–France–Spain). We distinguish two types of end-moraine complexes: (1) those in which at least a far-flung moraine exists beyond a frequently nested end-moraine complex (the most common) and (2) those in which a close-nested end moraine encompasses at least two …
The Landscape of the Sierra Nevada
Permafrost is warming at a global scale
Permafrost warming has the potential to amplify global climate change, because when frozen sediments thaw it unlocks soil organic carbon. Yet to date, no globally consistent assessment of permafrost temperature change has been compiled. Here we use a global data set of permafrost temperature time series from the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost to evaluate temperature change across permafrost regions for the period since the Internationa…
The Permafrost Young Researchers Network (Pyrn) is getting older
A lasting legacy of the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007–2008 was the promotion of the Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN), initially an IPY outreach and education activity by the International Permafrost Association (IPA). With the momentum of IPY, PYRN developed into a thriving network that still connects young permafrost scientists, engineers, and researchers from other disciplines. This research note summarises (1) PYRN’s developme…
The urbanisation on the slopes of Sarajevo and the rise of geomorphological hazards during the post-war period
Towards an unsustainable urban development in post‐war S arajevo
Sarajevo, the capital of B osnia and H erzegovina, is located in a karst geomorphological environment. The topographical setting strongly influences the urban geographical distribution and urban development, as well as the sustainability policies implemented in the city. The incorporation of an environmental agenda and the focus on sustainable development have characterised urban planning in cities in C entral and E astern E urope that are transi…
Environmental evolution in Sierra Nevada (South Spain) since the Last Glaciation, based on multi-proxy records
Palaeoecological evolution in Sierra Nevada (Southern Spain) over the last millennium inferred from solifluction landforms, lake sediments and documentary sources
Preliminary results of the Holocene palaeoenvironmental evolution in the Serra da Estrela (Portugal)
