Microstructure and geochemical properties of modern and buried soils and hosting permafrost sediments of the Batagay retrogressive thaw slump
The paleopedology of the world’s largest retrogressive thaw slump, Batagay, is understudied. Micromorphological and geochemical analysis reveal the properties of th host sediments and major pedogenic features. Epigenetic soil profiles of Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 7 (or older) and 5e are clearly distinguished and well developed due to favorable bioclimatic conditions for pedogenesis, probably similar to modern ones. The oldest unit contain…
Seasonal Campsites of the Sal Steppes: Identification of Cultural Layers and Economic Strategy
The paper describes the studies of the seasonal camps that steppe herders arranged in the balka systems of the Sal and Manych rivers in the Rostov region as well as their results. It also considers the model of everyday economic activities that small groups of mobile herders who occupied these sites engaged in throughout several historical periods. Extreme scarcity of material remains suggests that the everyday routine of the site residents depen…
