  • Timing of peat initiation across the central Congo Basin

Open Access•Greta C Dargie, Pauline Gulliver et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

The central Congo Basin contains the world’s most extensive tropical peatland complex, spanning 16.7 million hectares. Until now, radiocarbon dating of basal peats has been limited to 14 samples with poor spatial coverage, and suggested that peat typically initiated during the Holocene. We present 38 new basal dates, improving spatial coverage across the region. Some of the new basal dates are much older than any previous dates, indicating that p…

  • Low, but gradually growing deforestation and carbon emissions from the Cuvette Centrale peatlands, 2001–2021

Open Access•Shona Jenkins Shona Jenkins, Shona J Jenkins et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Earth’s largest tropical peatland, first mapped in 2017, is located within an immense wetland in the Congo Basin, the Cuvette Centrale, covering 167 600 km 2 . Here, for the first time, we estimate spatio-temporal tree cover loss patterns and the resultant carbon emissions in these forested peatlands using Global Forest Change data from 2001–2021. We find tree cover loss affected 1.4% of the peatlands over 20 years (0.07% yr −1 ), with 89% occurr…

  • The vulnerability of tropical peatlands to oil and gas exploration and extraction

    Open Access•Ian T Lawson, Eurídice N Honorio Coronado et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in Environmental Geography•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 141

Tropical peatlands store globally significant quantities of carbon and are ecologically and culturally important, but little is known about their vulnerability to oil and gas exploration and extraction. Here, we analyse the exposure of tropical peatlands to the activities of the petroleum industry and review what is known about the sensitivity of peatlands to these activities. We find that 8.3% (107,000 km 2 ) of the total area of tropical peatla…
