Hidden in the mound – Exploring the stratigraphy and paleoenvironmental context of an Early Iron Age burial mound (Süttő, Hungary) by semi-destructive pedological and botanical approaches
Combined semi-destructive approach enhances the understanding of the stratigraphy of Early Iron Age burial mound. • Paleosoil transmits pedological and land use information of the Middle Danube valley. • Geoarchaeological, archaeobotanical and radiocarbon data provide details on the life cycle of Early Iron Age burial mound. Early Iron Age burial mounds (800/750–550 cal BC) in the Carpathian Basin hold significant environmental and cultural value…
Geoarchaeological study of an Early Iron Age burial mound at Süttő, Hungary
From aerial survey to magnetometer/GPR prospection, Shallow geological corings to retrieve stratigraphic information, Soil and sediment samples for environmental archaeological analyses
C age of recent natural earthworm biospheroids—implications for paleosol dating
Earthworm biospheroids are a useful alternative to radiocarbon ( 14 C) soil dating. In this study, we undertook a series of measurements to test the 14 C dating potential/performance of recent earthworm biospheroid granules. A novel sample preparation protocol for 14 C in biospheroids was developed and elaborated at Atomki (Institute for Nuclear Research) and tested on IAEA reference materials. 24 natural biospheroid samples were extracted from f…
The last 40,000 years of a floodplain area (Tisza, Hungary) comparative case study of 14C and OSL methods
To investigate the environmental history of the Tisza River (Hungary), we applied 14 C and OSL dating methods for five parallel, neighboring cores from the flood plain area (Jászság Basin). Four major sedimentary layers were identified: meadow soil on the top (S1); silty-clay (S2); clayey-silt (S3) section; and fine sand (S4). 14 C and OSL data were integrated into a synthetic age-depth model using the BACON software package. Formation of the S1 …
Well-preserved Norway spruce needle phytoliths in sediments can be a new paleoenvironmental indicator
Analysis of phytoliths (plant silica bodies) still may have an unrevealed potential in paleoenvironmental reconstruction studies. This can provide novel findings in research on environmental change as phytoliths play an important role in the silicon biogeochemical cycle. In favorable environmental conditions, Picea abies [L.] H. Karst (Norway spruce) needles develop a phytolith layer consisting of more or less cubical or cuboid (blocky) phytolith…
Soil Organic Carbon Dating of Paleosoils of Alluvial Fans in a Blown Sand Area (Nyírség, Hungary)
The most widely used dating techniques in quaternary research are the radiocarbon ( 14 C) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating methods. In some environments, the investigated sediments do not contain enough material for 14 C dating. In these cases, 14 C dating of bulk sediment may be used as a last resort. The major aim of the present study was to determine the reliability and limitations of the different fractions of the soil organ…
Gas Ion Source Performance of the Environmicadas at Hekal Laboratory, Debrecen, Hungary
A coupled accelerator mass spectrometer–gas interface system has been successfully operating at the Hertelendi Laboratory of Environmental Studies, Debrecen, Hungary, since 2013. Over the last 6 years more than 500 gas targets were measured below 100 μg carbon content for carbon isotopic composition. The system was tested with blanks, OxII, IAEA-C1, IAEA-C2, and IAEA-C7 standards. The performance of our instrumentation shows good agreement with o…
New Radiocarbon Data from the Paleosols of the NYíRSéG blown Sand Area, Hungary
Despite many ideas about the age and processes of sand movements and paleosol formation, there are still some uncertainties in this relations in the Nyírség, eastern Hungary. The major aim of the present study was to clarify the chronology of fossil soils and blown-sand layers in the sand dunes of the Nyírség using radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating on soil and charcoal samples. Charcoal and soil samples were collected from buried paleosols from differen…
Reconstruction of Soil Carbon Redistribution Processes along a Hillslope Section in a Forested Area
The vertical distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) with depth and its horizontal pattern is influenced by the topography and relief of the surface, due to lateral redistribution of soil material along slopes. Spatial and temproral variability of these changes is frequently due to human impacts on the landscape. In our study, the results of these processes were studied in detail in a small sub-catchment in a forested hillslope section using ra…
Geoarchaeological Study of Szálka and Vajda Kurgans (Great Hungarian Plain) Based on Radiocarbon and Geophysical Analyses
Two archaeologically unexplored mounds were studied in the area of the central Great Hungarian Plain. The age of the construction of the mounds was clarified on the basis of radiocarbon ( 14 C) age determination of buried soil layers. Different, later-building phases of the mounds were detected by pedological and geo-electric analyses of the human-made layers. The age of the buried soils was corrected for the reservoir age of the recent soils fou…
