  • Remote Habitability as Method

    Open Access•Margherita Grazioli, Giulia Urso•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2026

This paper focuses on the theoretical and methodological configuration of what we define as the ‘Remote Habitability Method’ (RHM). This place‐sensitive epistemological and research‐making approach aims at understanding what makes remote places inhabitable. While quantitative, economic growth‐oriented approaches have long set research and policy agendas regarding marginalised areas, we argue that more fine‐grained, fieldwork‐based approaches are …

  • Resilience or lock-in? Path dependency and structural change after the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake

Open Access•Paolo Bottero, Marco Modica et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2026

Focusing on the devastating 2009 earthquake in L’Aquila (Italy), we investigate how local economies adapt and specialise after disasters. We apply a large-scale synthetic control across multiple indices (specialisation, diversity, complexity) over a long period (2004–20). Results show persistent specialisation and concentration, a halving of diversity, and a delayed decline in complexity, with resilience stemming from the administrative continuit…

  • The more labelled, the more resilient? Place branding and the 2008 Great Recession in Italian inner areas

Open Access•Fabiano Compagnucci, Alessandra Faggian et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2025•References: 6

This paper addresses the theoretical and empirical gap regarding the relationship between place branding and regional economic resilience during the 2008 Great Recession, focusing on Italian inner areas as defined by the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI) classification. Specifically, it investigates whether labels linked to preservation and quality of nature and landscape, agriculture and livestock production, and cultural–historical–archi…

  • The cultural and creative economy in Italy

Open Access•Alessandro Crociata, Adriana Carolina Pinate et al.•ARTICLE•European Urban and Regional Studies•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 14

In this article, we analyse the structure of the Italian cultural and creative economy, focusing on peripheral areas. We highlight patterns of specialisation and spatial dependency through employment data and firms’ data. In addition, we develop a novel data set by collecting data that use the least aggregated territorial unit, that is, Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics level 4 (from the French version Nomenclature des Unités terri…

  • Discontent in the ‘peripheries’

Giulia Urso, Alessandra Faggian et al.•ARTICLE•Territory Politics Governance•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 23

The concept of periphery, going beyond the mere interpretation in geographical terms, incorporates a ‘relational’ character that is implicitly characterized by connotations of power and inequality. Peripheries can be actively created as an outcome of shifts in economic and political decision-making at various scales. The recent populist wave has brought to the fore the issue of peripheries as ‘left behind’ places, striking back in the ballot boxe…

  • Italian cultural and creative industries following the Great Recession

    Open Access•Maria Giovanna Brandano, Giulia Urso•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 37

The cultural and creative industries (CCIs) have variously been seen as a stimulus for urban and regional development. They were also one of the few sectors in the UK and European Union countries to weather the storm of the 2008 Great Recession. Starting from the curiosity aroused by these premises, and given the paucity of studies on Italian CCIs, we analyse the growth trend of the sector following the economic shock of the Great Recession to as…

  • Economies, Institutions and Territories

Luca Storti, Giulia Urso et al.•BOOK•Economies, Institutions and…•2022

If individuals don't like bribery but it's widespread, then how does bribery happen? The question of how people choose to engage in bribery-and what their choices imply for individuals and for the market for bribes-remains unanswered. In a novel analysis of the logic of first moves-how invitations to exchange bribes are extended and by whom-I reveal that, in a context where bribery is prevalent and the threat of punishment is weak, service-provider…

  • Distant but Vibrant Places. Local Determinants of Adaptability to Peripherality

Open Access•Alessandra de Renzis, Alessandra Faggian et al.•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Economische en…•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 58

Against the discourse according to which peripheral areas are places doomed to an inevitable fate of constant demographic decline, the aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the local determinants fostering adaptability to prolonged challenges connected to a condition of peripherality. Exploiting the classification produced within the Italian National Strategy for Inner Areas, we investigate the determinants of positive demogr…

  • Migration propensity of peripheral youth

Open Access•Giulia Valeria Sonzogno, Giulia Urso et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 50

The social and economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic are at risk of exacerbating the pre-existing intergenerational and interregional inequalities between and within countries, such as those between core and peripheral areas. In particular, in the latter, especially in Italy, the lack of opportunities and access to essential services may affect the current and new generations to come, while also compromising the development of the countr…

  • Shocking events. Institutional reactions to abrupt changes

    Open Access•Giulia Urso, L Storti et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2021

  • Can extreme events be an opportunity? Depopulation and resilience of rural communities in Central Italy after the 1997 earthquake

Open Access•Federico Fantechi, Giulia Urso et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 11

  • Metropolisation and the challenge of rural-urban dichotomies

    Giulia Urso•ARTICLE•Urban Geography•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 8

The challenge of governing metropolitan regions calls urban-rural relationships into question. Rural actors’ silence within it and the blurring of boundaries between urban and rural are still much debated issues. This paper explores the rural perspective on metropolisation processes, considering local actors’ perceptions towards incorporation into a larger urban entity, urban-rural cooperation and the barriers hindering it. Our case investigates …
