Native–immigrant wage gap
Chile has historically had very low immigration rates. However, the Venezuelan crisis shifted this trend. From 2017 to 2022, the share of Venezuelan workers among total migrant workers in Chile increased by more than 200 per cent. Using individual-level data from 2022, we estimate the native–Venezuelan wage gap in Chile. We find a significant wage penalty for Venezuelans, but the results differ by gender and position in the wage distribution. On …
Gender wage gap among the educated
This paper estimates the gender wage gap in Chile for workers with higher education within the framework of the glass ceiling literature. We study the change in the gender wage gap by field of study from 2017 to 2022. For this purpose, we estimate a Mincer model with Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition, using data from the Chilean National Socioeconomic Household Characterization. Our results document a gender wage gap in the range of 17–25% before the …
It’s the economy, stupid
Growing distance between antagonistic groups has been increasingly observed in established democracies. This trend is often linked to income inequality and disparities arising from globalisation. Although existing work has explored these dynamics in developed countries, there is a notable gap in comprehensive analyses in developing countries, especially at the subnational level, mostly due to data availability. This paper revisits the relationshi…
On the weighting of homo economicus and homo virtus in human behaviour
In economic sciences, most analyses focus on the economic person construct. However, this that formalization does not capture the complex nature of human behaviour. This paper estimates the weight that economic and noneconomic dimensions of human behaviour have on wellbeing. A utility function is considered that models behaviour from a complex standpoint, where the motivations of the economic individual (homo economicus) are analysed in a broad p…
Pension Incentives and Retirement Planning in Rural China
This paper estimates the impact of social pension programs on retirement planning in rural China, focusing on the New Rural Pension Scheme (NRPS). Retirement planning is defined as an individual's intention to detach from the workforce at a given age instead of working for as long as physically possible. We also consider an individual's self‐reported health characteristics and subjective life expectancy. Overall, we find that the NRPS does not in…
