The Dynamics of Earnings Inequality between Israel's Sub‐Populations: A Longitudinal Perspective
We review results from previous research on the dynamics of earnings inequality in Israel. For as diverse society as Israel, we focus attention on the role of education in producing differential earnings trajectories between men and women, Jews and Arabs, and Ashkenazi‐Jews and Mizrahi‐Jews. This review highlights the importance of the longitudinal perspective for studying income inequality, as we show that earnings inequality is dynamic in Israe…
The gendered value of education in the ‘college-for-all’ era and the role of literacy and numeracy skills
Intergenerational Educational Mobility and Life-Course Income Trajectories in the United States
Atheoretical formulation derived from the cumulative advantage literature, that intergenerational educational mobility has enduring life-course income effects above and beyond individuals’ education, is empirically tested. This formulation contrasts sharply with both the human capital model, which does not consider parental education as a determinant of children’s income, and the sociological research on social mobility, which mostly relies on a …
In Their Footsteps or Shadow? Gender Differences in Choosing a STEM Major as a Function of Sibling Configuration and Older Sibling’s Gender and Math Ability
Although the association between siblings’ compositional characteristics and educational performance has been extensively studied, the question of whether the features of a sibling group are related to substantive gendered educational preferences has not been examined. Our analysis of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 cohort (NLSY-79) Mothers and Children Files ( N = 1545; 57% young women; 22% STEM major) showed that siblings’ compos…
Trends in intergenerational educational mobility in Israel: 1983–2008
Focusing on the intergenerational educational association alone obscures discussions of downward and upward mobility and immobility patterns, which entail different life experiences and their potential consequences. Utilizing data on Israelis aged 25–32 years old over three periods, the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, during which tertiary education expanded dramatically, we examine if and how relative and absolute intergenerational educational mobility…
Cumulative Disadvantage Dynamics for Palestinian Israeli Arabs in Israel's Economy
Recruiting the cumulative advantage mechanism, this study explores how earnings inequality between dominant and minority groups in the same society unfolds over the life course. Jews and Palestinian Israeli Arabs in Israel's economy provide the context for this study. We find that the earnings gap between the groups has widened over time, particularly among men. This trend is hardly mediated by education, since returns to education have increased…
Short and long-term consequences of high-school tracks for earnings in Israel
Vocational and academic curricula are said to hold both short-term and long-term consequences for economic outcomes. The literature on this topic, however, fails to address the long-term consequences of educational tracking. Just as important, this literature did not examine returns to high-school tracking within levels of further education. This paper aims to fill these gaps in the literature. Utilizing longitudinal data of Israeli men and women…
Judicial Procedural Involvement (JPI): A Metric for Judges’ Role in Civil Litigation, Settlement, and Access to Justice
We examine judges’ role in civil litigation by studying empirically the relationship between judicial procedural involvement (JPI) and lawsuits’ mode of disposition (MoD). Furthermore, we propose JPI as a metric for the allocation of judicial attention to litigants. Applying the framework to Israeli trial court data, we find that 60 per cent of cases included JPI (through hearings and rulings on motions) whereas 40 per cent involved only the cour…
Intracohort Trends in Ethnic Earnings Gaps: The Role of Education
This study demonstrates that studying ethnic/racial inequality on the basis of cross-sectional data conceals how such inequality might unfold over the life course. Moving beyond a snapshot perspective, we ask, Do Israel's Jewish ethnic groups differ in their long-term earnings trajectories? Analyzing nearly 20 years of registered earnings data, the authors find that for the same cohort (25- to 32-year-old Jews in 1995), the ethnic earnings gap ha…

School choice in a stratified geography: Class, geography, otherness, and moral boundaries
Using open-ended, semi-structured interviews, this study pulls together insights on social class and geography to explore how parents choose schools differently for their children in a unique Israeli setting. Querying parents’ feelings and perceptions about themselves and others in their immediate and distant locality offers an opportunity to uncover nuances in the ways parents appropriate and reproduce ideas of spatial privilege, social mixing, …
Gender Differences in Fields of Study: The Role of Significant Others and Rational Choice Motivations
In recent decades, young women outperform men aca-demically at all levels of school and are more likely to obtain college degrees and enroll in graduate school (DiPrete and Buchmann, 2013). However, while women
Curricular Choice: A Test of a Rational Choice Model of Education
Rational choice theories of education view student's educational decision as a sequence of binary choices between options that entail long-term utility and options that reduce short-term risk of failure. One of the best articulated models of educational choice asserts that choice between alternative options is affected by students’ utility considerations, their expectations regarding the odds of success or failure in alternative educational optio…
