  • Dynamic threshold effects of corruption on tourism demand

    Open Access•Michael Polemis•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research…•2026

This note investigates the complex relationship between corruption and tourism demand, employing a dynamic panel threshold model in the spirit of Seo and Shin (2016). Using a panel dataset of international tourism destinations over the period 2008–2022 and two corruption measures reflecting actual control of corruption and perceived corruption in the public sector, we unravel a non-monotonic relationship between corruption and tourism demand. The…

  • Hotels’ occupancy rates and convergence

Open Access•Michael Polemis, Panayiotis Tzeremes et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2023

The scope of this study is to unravel possible convergence clubs regarding the occupancy rates of the hotel industry in the US states in the aftermath of the first COVID-19 pandemic wave. For this reason, the underlying paper resorts to the application of the generic convergence algorithm developed in Phillips and Sul (2007) for a sample of 50 US states over the daily period ranging from 01.12.2019 to 26.07.2020. The empirical analysis supports t…

  • Threshold effects during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis

Michael Polemis, Thanasis Stengos•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2022

The empirical analysis employs a static threshold model using a daily dataset over the six months from the first confirmed European COVID-19 case (25 January 2020). The results indicate that the investigated relationship is non-monotonic (‘U-shaped’) depending on the intensity of the lockdown measures proxied by the Coronavirus Government Response Tracker Index (CGR)

  • National lockdown under Covid-19 and hotel performance

    Open Access•Michael Polemis•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research…•2021•Cited by: 2

Difference-in-Differences methodology to examine effects on hotel performance. • Daily data are used to capture the instant policy effect on hotel performance. • The national lockdown in Italy alleviated hotel performance by 68% on average. • Hotel performance in Italy and Turkey is examined during the treatment period

  • Sustainable development, environmental policy and renewable energy use

    Open Access•Panagiotis Fotis, Michael Polemis•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2018•Cited by: 10•References: 5

The aim of this paper is to cast light on the relationship between sustainable development environmental policy and renewable energy use. We utilize a dynamic GMM approach over a panel of 34 European Union (EU) countries spanning the period 2005–2013. Our findings reveal a positive monotonic relationship between development and pollution. Energy saving positively affects environmental degradation, while energy intensity increases air pollution. O…

  • Asymmetric price adjustments in US gasoline markets

Konstantinos Eleftheriou, Peter Nijkamp et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2018

Gasoline retail prices show sometimes wild, asymmetric fluctuations over time. We explore the impact of spatial dependence on gasoline retail price formation by using for the first time an asymmetric spatial error correction model (ASpECM). We find evidence that the generally assumed symmetric price pattern is fully reversed when we account for spatial spillover effects, indicating that retail prices adjust more rapidly in an upward than in a dow…
