  • A Theory of Practical Reason

    Open Access•Julian Nida‐rümelin, Julian Nida-Rümelin•BOOK•A Theory of Practical Reason•2023

  • Empowered and embedded: Ethics and agile processes

Open Access•Niina Zuber, Jan Gogoll et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2022

This article focuses on the structural aspects of the development of ethical software, and argues that ethical considerations need to be embedded into the (agile) software development process. In fact, it is claimed that agile processes of software development lend themselves specifically well for this endeavor. First, it is contended that ethical evaluations need to go beyond the use of software products and include an evaluation of the software…

  • Eine Theorie praktischer Vernunft

    Julian Nida‐rümelin, Julian Nida-Rümelin•BOOK•Theorie Praktischer Vernunft•2020

This book is the first full presentation of Julian Nida-Rümelin's theory of practical rationality and of practical philosophy in general. It sets itself apart from both rational choice approaches and the constructivism of post-modern and Kantian thought. The nucleus of the analysis is the embeddability of one-off decisions in the larger context of a praxis and of an individual and cultural way of life

  • Globalization, migration, and the role of the state

    Julian Nida‐rümelin, Julian Nida-Rümelin•CHAPTER•Multiple Modernities and Good…•2018

We should think of the interactions of human society, both within national borders and beyond them, across the entirety of human history, as resembling a collection of different densities of a myriad of particles in a body of moving liquid. Liberal philosophers are confronted with a continuum of small differences, starting in the local region of cultural and religious communities and building up to the normative constituents of civilian statehood…

  • Plädoyer für eine normative Anthropologie

    Julian Nida‐rümelin, Julian Nida-Rümelin•CHAPTER•Anthropologie und Ethik•2015

  • Anthropologie und Ethik

    Jan‐Christoph Heilinger, Julian Nida‐rümelin et al.•BOOK•Anthropologie und Ethik•2015

The relationship between anthropology as the study of human beings and ethics as the study of what humans ought to do is close and multifaceted. The authors address the following questions: Are moral norms grounded in human nature or are they independent of it? Does ethics take into account human weaknesses or is morality absolute? If people change, do the requirements of morality change as well?

  • Über menschliche Freiheit

    Julian Nida‐rümelin, Julian Nida-Rümelin•CHAPTER•Vernunft und Freiheit•2012

  • Risikoethik

    Julian Nida‐rümelin, Julian Nida-Rümelin et al.•BOOK•Risikoethik•2012

Rationally coping with situations with uncertain consequences is a matter of universal concern in modern societies. Here a critique of current paradigms of dealing with risk is the starting point for developing an ethics of risk that also takes into account individual rights and justice. The basis for this work is provided by a clear terminological analysis, as well as insights derived from modern decision theory. In addition, the application of …

  • Was ist der Mensch?

    Jan‐Christoph Heilinger, Julian Nida‐rümelin et al.•BOOK•Was Ist der Mensch?•2008

The question of the nature of man has occupied human beings everywhere and in every period including the present. The scientists, politicians, theologians, journalists, and writers assembled here give their personal responses to the question in fifty incisive contributions representing different cultural traditions. What is to be expected? Clearly not a conclusive answer to the question but rather a dazzling spectrum of contemporary positions reg…

  • Collective ldentities and Citizenship

    Open Access•Julian Nida‐rümelin, Julian Nida-Rümelin•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•1993

In the following I try to show that there is an attractive notion of citizenship which is independent of any kind of collective identity. Citizenship is understood as one form of social interaction. It is argued that in order to understand social interaction adequately, it is necessary to introduce a structural theory of practical rationality, to the extent this conception of citizenship is based on the theory of structural rationality

  • Zur Philosophie der Demokratie: Arrow-Theorem, Liberalität und strukturelle Normen

    Open Access•Julian Nida‐rümelin, Julian Nida-Rümelin•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•1991

The paradoxes and dilemmas of social choice theory can be taken as an argument against a certain view of democracy: For the identity theory democracy represents a collective actor standing for aggregated individual interests. According to a second model of society, democracy has its normative basis in structural traits of interaction and cooperation. Within the formal theory of politics both the Arrow-Theorem and the Liberal Paradox undermine the…

  • Wir-Intentionen und die Logik kollektiver Entscheidungen

    Open Access•Julian Nida‐rümelin, Julian Nida-Rümelin•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•1986

During the last two decades social choice theory has become an established branch of the social sciences. But in spite of its contributions on a high level of precision by logical and mathematical means the theory is still vague regarding the interpretation of its basic concepts. In this article I try to cope with that problem by distinguishing three different areas of application of social choice theory. The concept of ‘we-intention’ in the sens…
